We just returned from a five day stay at Sorrento in the Grand Hotel Cocumella. Though the hotel is beautiful, with a great staff, nice garden, views and huge pool, its restaurant is too expensive for the food they serve.
A bottle of a local wine starts at 35 Euros, when you can purchase one in the local store for less than 8 Euros. A diner for two will be for 160 Euros, without dessert and only one bottle of wine ( a cheap one!!!).
So, if you go, try the local restaurants around the hotel.

I recently spent five nights at the Grand Hotel Cocumella in Sorrento. When I arrived I inquired about an uprade but was told the hotel was sold out and that an upgrade was impossible. The place seemed deserted to me. The room was large but dark. There was no balcony and there was no view. I suppose if my room was a suite with a view of the sea I would have rated the hotel higher. I feel the hotel was way over priced. On the plus side the food was good and the employees were friendly and helpful.
The grounds were beautiful and the pool was a delight. I probably would not stay there again.

I was expecting this hotel to be one of the best on our holiday from the reviews on Trip Advisor which is usually a great help. How wrong could I have been! This hotel may have been nice 20 years ago but it has not been touched since. The room was tired, dirty and well past its sell by date as was the hotel in general. There were insufficent staff and they did not have a clue with regard to 5 star service. This is priced as a 5 star hotel but is definitely nowhere near that standard in terms of the quality of the building or the service. The location is also not great. A very dissapointing experience.

With the help of this website my fiance & I booked various hotels in Rome, we then travelled down to Sorrento & decided to treat ourselves to 2 nights staying at the Cocumella Hotel & booked a junior suite..Well what can I say..what an exquisite hotel, the website does not do the grounds justice, the garden is so tranquil and perfectly kept. The swimming pool is huge and most inviting. The room was beautiful, one of the best we've ever stayed in. We ate lunch on our first day on the terrace by the pool & dinner the following evening on the restaurant terrace both great. The staff at this hotel are among the best I have come across, they are all extremely polite, friendly and obviously enjoy working in such a beautiful hotel. We were very sad to leave and will definately return.

...about this hotel just don't understand what this part of the world is all about. You go to Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi etc. to soak up the view, atmosphere, tranquility and ambience of the area. If you want big rooms, nightly entertainment and over enthusiastic/irritating staff then go to Disneyworld.

Cocumella is a traditional, classy Italian hotel. The rooms aren't enormous (although we had the bridal suite which was the size of a studio apartment) but how much space do you need or do you go on holiday to measure the floor space?. The staff don't greet you with a big cheesy smile and a "HAVE A NICE DAY", every morning, they leave you to enjoy the peace of a well deserved holiday in the ideal setting of the orange trees overlooking Capri and Vesuvius. Yes, it is a 10 minute walk to town but do you really want to spend your entire holiday sat on your rear watching it get larger by the minute as you scoff another slice of pizza? Take a stroll and enjoy the beautiful, ancient Italian scenery. It's remarkable how interesting a place can be when it's been around for longer than 200 or so years.

The room was lovely, the view spectacular, the concierge as helpful as you could wish. What more could you ask for?

In short, the hotel is delightful, my only complaint would be that there were a couple of guests staying there who would have preferred to be in a Hilton with 148 channels on the TV and pancakes and waffles at breakfast.

We chose this hotel because the guide books indicated it had a very large pool, a bar with nightly entertainment and an outstanding restaurant. We arrived there in April 2004 for three or four nights just after they went on to high season rates. After checking in, we gradually discovered that the restaurant was not yet open for the season, the piano bar had no entertainment and the pool was not yet filled. We were told we were too early for that by a couple of weeks. Understandably, perhaps, because the hotel was almost empty of guests. In spite of all this, they charged us the full high season rate for a very small suite. I would have left the hotel if my wife had not already unpacked everything. An additional annoyance was the location, which was a $12 taxi ride to the center of activity in Sorrento. If you have any interest in staying at the Cocumella, be sure to verify that their amenities will be in fact working and available during your stay. (By the day we left, the pool was half filled, but there was no other activity indicating it would soon be ready for use.)
