Staff took time to explain menus, service was excellent as was the food. We visited 3 times and each time we had more fun. The prices were very reasonable, 2 courses with ample wine for about 60 euros. No hesitation in recommending this restaurant, for the food and the staff..

Ciao Toto's decor and ambiance reminded me of a cheesy, seaside, strip-mall restaurant in Florida, but that is just part of its charm. This is a hidden gem in one of Italy's seaside towns, Sant'Agnello; close to Sorrento and stumbling distance from the Hotel Mediterraneo Sorrento and many other accommodations on the coast. We ate there twice; once for their signature seafood dishes and once after hearing they had the best pizza in town and were impressed on both occasions.

The Food: I ordered the Catch of the Day in a lemon sauce. Some places overdo the lemon and the dish tastes like Pledge rather than fish. Not here; the lemon sauce was the perfect compliment to the fish that was filleted table-side. I loved that the menu denoted which seafood items were fresh vs. frozen. There were options for every wallet; the catch of the day was a little pricey, but my husband's mixed seafood in linguine was very reasonable. The portions are very sizable as well; it's very easy to split a dish or two and be stuffed full. The pizza lived up to the hype. We wish we could have ordered more than two to sample more of their flavors. Of our two weeks in Italy, Ciao Toto hands down had the best pizza (and we ate a lot of pizza!). Note: The pizza ovens are only fired-up for dinner so there is no pizza for lunch.

The Service: We had Pepe for both our nights dining at Ciao Toto and he's reason enough to visit the restaurant. What a character! Pepe is charming, funny, full of energy, passionate about the restaurant and the food, warm, and welcoming. He showed us around the restaurant, took us to the kitchen, introduced us to the chef, and showed us how some of the dishes were made. Pepe anticipated our needs and made us feel like we were one of the regulars.

The Scene: This isn't a romantic, seafood restaurant. This is a place where families go for birthdays. Where tables for 20 are pushed together and children run around playing while their parents, aunts, uncles, and grandparents drink the house wine, pass bread, share plates, and laugh out loud while telling stories. The hues of salmon pink reminded me of homes near retirement villages in Sarasota or Boca Raton. And there is an old television mounted in the corner, either playing the news, an Italian soap opera, or a local soccer match. Normally this wouldn't be my kind of scene, but it was fun watching Italian families out having a good time over a great meal.

The Dessert: About the only thing wrong with the meal was the dessert. Not that it was bad, but it a country of fine desserts they were just average. Skip the dessert and get more food or go for an after-dinner walk to grab a scoop or two of gelato.

If you are staying in Sant' Agnello, a meal at Ciao Toto is a must. Those staying in Sorrento, make the trip to get away from the touristy places and try a place that is truly local and delicious (It's about a 15 minute walk or short bus or cab ride).

Visiting Ciao Toto in September this year by walking all round St Agnello after visiting Pompeii we were grateful to find this haven. On the first night of 3 we ate there we were lucky to meet an American couple who knew Toto well from frequent visits to family in the area. Quickly our tables were moved together by the helpful and happy waiter and we enjoyed an evening of animated banter and excellent and simple Italian Fayre in a bubbly atmosphere and made some good friends in both the US couple and the restaurant staff. Watch out for the Star Trek swishing hands free entry to the toilets. The second night after a long day out and about we headed back to Toto and lo and behold so had our American pals, another night of fun and good food ensued with terrific wine topped off with a super black grappa chosen by our waiter friends. Third night and topping of a day in Amalfi with another great meal but alas not our US pals we were treated to similar excellent service despite our pidgin Italian and no shortage of atmosphere. Our fourth night followed a chilled out relax day and we were afforded special attention prior to our impending departure the following day, this included the grappa bottle being left at our table for a self help session. I can't compare Toto with other places in the area as we found all we wanted in this one place. Good and simple food friendly staff and interactive guests each night we were there. Even some of our normally standoffish fellow Brits loosened up and joined in the fun. The fish soup is a must try dish but don't expect to eat it with spoon!
