“Comfortable hotel”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

Arrived on a Sunday , booked with crystal ski. Rooms not available until 3 pm so foyer and lobby was packed full of people and their suitcases which was not an ideal start. However, things did improve. Room basic but comfortable, food plentiful, cold buffet, soup and a choice of hot dishes. House wine surprisingly good for price.
Ski rental shop next door, ski bus stop across the road, skiing good and varied.
A good choice overall.

Room Tip: Avoid room above bar and square ideally.

My family has just returned from a week’s skiing holiday is Sauze d'Oulx where we had a fantastic weeks skiing in a wonderful area.

During our time in Italy we had the good fortune to stay at the Relais Des Alpes hotel. The hotel was amazing and the staff were wonderful and couldn't do enough for you. The food was a buffet style affair with a great choice for breakfasts and evening meal. The bedroom was very clean and comfortable and a lovely warm base to come back to.

The hotel is located in the main square so is quite central and a free and regular ski bus stops just opposite the hotel if you don’t fancy the 0.5Km walk to the slopes.

I would thoroughly recommend the hotel for families looking for a relaxing and comfortable stay in Sauze.

Room Tip: As the hotel is in the centre of the town ask for a room on an upper floor to minimise noise from ou...

Enjoyed a week in Sauze D'oulx with family and friends. Traveled with Crystal, bus drops you a few hundred metres away due to traffic restrictions. You walk without your cases so no problem. Stayed on the first floor of the hotel which was occasionally noisy but room size was good, clean and had tea/coffee facilities. Good internet wireless connection (password card from reception). Ski room could have been bigger but always managed to find a spot for Skis / boots.
The bus stops opposite the hotel so an easy walk across the car park, never had to wait more than about 10 minutes.
Meals in the hotel were very good, breakfast had a good choice of food including hot meals. Evening meals always had a good choice of starters / soups / main course and sweets . We had the drinks package with the hotel which was 50 euros for 100 euro spend. This was well worth it as a bottle of wine only worked out about 9 euros. This also applied to the Queens bar which we often used for drinks and pool.
Hotel service was always very helpful, any questions / issues we had were always sorted quickly. The holiday tax was 1 euro per night per person, not as high as we were expecting. Overall the hotel is well recommended. It's also close to the ski hire shop and supermarket.
The resort is great for intermediate skiers, not so good for beginners. Although there was only two main chair lifts up the mountain we never had to queue more than 5 minutes. I would recommend using the Sportina lift especially if you are a beginner.
The resort is very popular with the brits, I heard more English spoken than Italian on the piste and bars. This might be a good or bad point depending on the individual.

Stayed here as part of a Crystal package holiday early Feb flying from Bournemouth as a couple. Firstly we found the staff to be of the highest standard from the porter to the cleaners everyone was very friendly and professional.

Upon arrival we already had plans to go and get on the slopes asap as we arrived there around 12, the hotel not letting guests into rooms until 3pm was a bit poor (considering when leaving to return home you are out by 7am) and results in lots of people left to hang around and luggage sprawled everywhere in the reception. Didn't really bother us as for an upgrade to our 6 day ski pass we went and had an extra 3 1/2 hours on the slopes and got our ski legs back, however if that was not the case it would have got the holiday off to a disappointing start.

Rooms
We had a room on the 2nd floor, I had read tripadvisor reviews before leaving and the first thing I asked when we arrived was for a room higher up in the hotel - was told it would not be possible, whether it was due to them being full or it was because a coach-load of guests had just arrived I guess I will never know!

The rooms was quite large compared to what we normally expect, no bath only a shower tho, bathroom decor was good standard. Struggled to get the room to a cosy temperature even with adjustable heating set to max although it certainly wasn't cold. Beds are quite hard, which isn't such a bad thing and didn't affect my sleep however when returning home I did have that little bit more appreciation for how comfy my own bed is!

Hard floors are everywhere in this hotel, can appreciate why for cleaning purposes etc however it unfortunately creates lots of noise, sods law our room was next to the stairwell which meant lots of being woken up by people coming up stairs during the night in a less than considerate manner. Noise from the queens was also noticeable on 2 of the nights, I wondered whether it was a case of the bar door being left open as opposed to closed? Either way I would highly recommend bringing earplugs no matter how deep a sleeper you are. The best thing the hotel could do to improve would be to put carpet down.

Food
Staying half board - nobody's expecting gourmet, its the usual buffet sort of thing for the breakfast and evening meals. It was a higher standard than normal however, in particular the soups and the cooked meat section had something different each night and was always of a very high standard so the hotel gets a big thumbs up in this department, the only downside was the lack of free water/juice in the evening, the only way you could have something to drink with your dinner (even water) was to purchase it

Boot Room Facilities
We had arranged ski hire via the internet and the shop was by the main chairlift so rather than carry the equipment up and down the hill each day, we paid an extra $4/day and stored it in the shop (lo sportivo) it meant being able to walk up 'the hill' in trainers and not have to carry anything, and believe me it makes a difference and the hill can be quite tiring especially towards end of the week. The hotels bootroom looked very rammed but had it not been for the better arrangement we would have used it. There is also a ski deposit right by the chairlift which to be honest would be well worth the money when compared to storing equipment in the hotel and catching the ski bus/walking with equipment each day!

As for the rest of the ski holiday, the skiing is fantastic, we got to spend a day in all of the linked resorts including montgenevre (well worth paying for the 'away day' so you get all day there) sansicario and sestriere are definitely the best in terms of enjoyment and sauze was good too, upon returning I probably wouldn't bother about trekking over to claveire tho, massively let down by a lack of fast chairlifts (seemed to be only 1) and we felt like we spent half the time there creeping up the slopes.

Room Tip: Higher the better, bring earplugs!

A great location with ski bus stop opposite. Excellent choice of food at breakfast and dinner, with excellent waiting staff. Reception staff spoke fantasticEnglish. Free safe in room is a bonus.

Sauna and jacuzzi good value for EUR10 for the week.

Queens Bar can be noisy and could do with one or two more bar staff

Rooms are well equipped, but beds rather hard. Ours was also very cold, but put this down to being at the the end of the block( with two outside walls).

Sauze is a great resort for beginner skiiers, nice wide runs and with an area ski pass experienced skiiers can also explore a wider area. Would thoroughly recommend this hotel and resort.

Room Tip: Queens Bar can prove noisy so ask for a room on high floor, however all floors are tiled so it can b...

We stayed here as a couple 3-10 Feb 2013. Never been to Italy so new experience all round. I had read prev reviews so was aware of the comments re noisy Queens Bar etc. We were on the 4th floor at the front overlooking the piazza and the only noise issue was after it snowed all night and the snow plough was clearing the car park at 5am!!!! Not something to complain about in a winter resort really.
The room was very spacious, the bathroom ample sized and the shower was piping hot. Also, the bed was lovely and not soft (as many hotel beds are) so had a really good night sleep. The chambermaids all said hello with a smile, when we saw them, which is unusual as past experience abroad has led me to believe that they usually don't speak any english and are quite reluctant to converse.
The staff in the restaurant, reception and bar were all very welcoming, polite and always happy to help.
Some prev comments have mentioned the steep walk up to the Clotes lift. It is only about 250m to Clotes and is steep but, apparently, you can pay to leave your boots and skis in the Sportina Bowl area so can walk up to the lift in your outdoor boots and change. This saves you carrying all your equipment back and forth every day. However, we are both boarders so had no issue with the walk !!!! We did use the frequent ski bus most days to go round to Sportina lift though - 5 mins away.

The rental shop next to the hotel is where most will collect the equipment from. We brought our own snowboards but decided to ski on the last day (over to the dark side !!) and the rental shop gave us 10% discount as we were from Relais - worth mentioning if you have not pre-booked.

The runs are a bit easier than in previous resorts we have been to in Austria and France and some of the blues are very flat for boarders.

We went over to Sestriere one day just to do the Kandaha Olympic and World Cup Black run - definitely worth the effort to get out of Sauze as the Milky Way has over 400km of runs. The runs in Sauze are more than adequate to stay at all week though so don't feel the need to do everything just for the sake of it.

We also frequented La Grotta bar every day as happy hour is 4pm-7pm and we were coaxed in by a very happy, genial Scottish gentleman who could have talked snowboarding for ever. All local drinks (Paulaner, Prosecco etc) €2.50 - never quite understood the bloke who came in and ordered 2 Buds and a Corona and paid €17 though - fool !!!!

Overall, a gem of a trip and hotel. Short flight, very reasonable transfer, very comfortable hotel and great snow - perfect holiday so we will be back with friends again.

Stayed here 3/2-7/2, travelled with crystal ski.mixed group of family and friends from 20yrs to 50+! We all really enjoyed staying here. No problems with the ski buses getting on etc or leaving equipment in locker room.Yes it is a bit of a walk up the hill in boots if you wanted to walk but 10 mins maximum and if you cant make this why are you skiiing?? stay on bus to Sportina to miss out Clotes lift. ski back to Clotes to walk back down calling off in bars enroute. Recommend The Village straight across from botttom of piste. Much bigger inside then looks from outside and the best free apres food anywhere! All fresh made. Paddys bar and The Grotto who also give fab free pizza out. Missing those pizzas. The Hotel was great, reception staff really friendly and helpful. Rooms clean and comfortable and yes warm but turn off a radiator or open a window! I like to be warm especially after skiing in -15 so not a problem for me. My only complaint is that the beds are very hard. Food was good, plenty of it wide selection just what you needed after a hard day skiing. Breakfast had everything cereals, fruit, yogurt, cheese ham etc with toaster, bacon, boiled & scrambled eggs and a chef cooking omelettes to order. What more can you want? The Queens lounge was a good bar joined to the hotel although i found it cold in there but handy for a few beers. Would definately go back here and recommend it.
