Hotel Relais Des Alpes
Ranked #6 of 31 Hotels in Sauze d'Oulx
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed March 18, 2012

Just returned from Sauze with four friends at the Relais des alpes. Rooms were large and well equipped, bathrooms were also large and rooms were cleaned to a high standard every day.

Food and service at the hotel were also excellent.

Staff were friendly and never complained at requests for assistance. Crystal reps were also great, 10 times better than in Morzine 3 weeks earlier.

On the down side the bar underneath and to the side of the hotel can be noisy as the smoking area was just by our room at the front, although we were five guys so not really that bothered. If you are a family just ask for a room higher up or at the back and i`m sure you will be happy enough.

Boot room etc for skis was also good and right next to the bar which was nice after a hard days ski-ing.

Overall great stay, would definately recommend.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front on the square may be noisy for families.

Just back from a week in Sauze staying at this hotel- excellent !
Read previous reviews re noise and quality of food and have to say that we had no complaints whatsover. The food was super and really good quality and having a big breakfast meant that we only had two coffee stops during the day and avoided paying over the odds for lunches on piste, that said the coffees are half the price you would pay in French resorts. If you went to three nearby pubs at happy hour till 7pm,all three laid on food such as pizza slices to keep us going till dinner. The staff in the Hotel were very friendly and helpful. The Hotel itself has a large bar but no happy hour - pity as we would certainly have used it but does lay on free coffee and other hot drinks with cakes between 5 & 6 pm daily.
Skiing was excellent and the bus stop just outside the Hotel takes you to both main chairlifts and recommend missing the Clotes stop and keep on till bus stops at Sportina chair which gives the best access to the slopes.
Wi-fi can be accessed from bedroom which was a bonus.

The Relais des Alpes in Salze d'Oulx is in a great location just off the main street containing the bars and eating places in the town. The town itself has a rustic Italian feel with its narrow cobbled streets especially if you walk down the hill past the fountains. The hotel rooms are the largest I have experienced for a ski hotel and are very similar to travel lodge or premier inn style rooms. The bathroom was very clean and the windows had shutters so that we could block out the sun to get a good nights sleep. We had no problem with noise carrying from bars nearby. the TV in the room is not up to much as the only English channels are news ones. However, there is free wi-fi in the hotel which is a bonus! The meal times are 1930-2100 hrs for dinner and 0800-0930hrs for breakfast. The times are changed to incorporate trips to montegenvre in France for a days skiing and on departure day. Ski school starts at 1000hrs so there is plenty of time to get to your lesson if you have them booked. You get allocated a table on your first day and this is where you sit throughout all meals during your stay. Breakfast comprise of continental and cooked food and fruit and cereals/yoghurts. There is a lot of choice and the omelettes are particularly nice and they are cooked fresh to order by the chef. My only criticism was that some of the food was luke warm rather than being piping hot. This was only a minor problem and the staff are more than happy to help if there is a problem.
The dinners were also plentiful. There was a wide range of starters and soup every night. Then there was a choice of two different meat dishes. During our stay, there was pork ribs, salmon fillet, beef shank, meatballs, roast chicken etc there was also a pasta choice and pizza and a vegetarian choice every night as well as a few choices of desserts. There was more than enough food and it was of a good quality.
The hotel has a bar on the ground floor called The Queens Pub. This is based on a typical English pub although has a slightly Irish feel due to the decor. This bar is ok but not one of the best in Sauze. They do serve nice burgers and pizzas which were great on arrivals day while we were waiting to check in.
I would recommend Derby bar and Vagabondis which are about 25-50 yards from the hotel. There is also a great bar which serves pints of beer between 1600-1800 for 2.50 € each round the corner. Look out for the Scottish guy in the chequered jacket who will encourage you inside this bar as you walk back from the slopes!
The hotel has a secure ski boot and ski store next to the Queens pub which is great. We paid to leave our skis up on the mountain which cost 20 € each but I don't think it was really worth it. I would definitely recommend using the ski bus in the morning which takes you straight to the bottom of the sportinia lift which is the main lift in the resort. The bus stop is about 50yds out of the front of the hotel across the road. It is free. You can ski back down into the resort (next to the clotes lift) and end up only about 150 yards walk from the bars and about 300 yds from the hotel. This is all downhill and not too taxing in ski gear.
There is a great pizza shop that sells large slices of pizza for 2.50€ in the town right on the square. This is great for a pre-après ski snack. They also sell nice crepes.
We were very pleased with the hotel and the location and will definitely be looking to go back next year.
The skiing is awesome for intermediate skiers and the passes allow you to San Sicario, Sestriere, Claviere and also Montegenvre in France for one day. You will not be disappointed! We were lucky that we had quite a large dump of snow while we were there which made the skiing conditions very good. I know that others had been experiencing very warm temperatures and lack of snow in the weeks before which had made the runs icy / slushy.
I would definitely recommend this hotel - we paid £500 each for the trip and this was great value. Anyone that expects The Ritz for this price is expecting too much lol ! What you get is an ideally situated, clean hotel offering good value food and accommodation.

Great budget hotel, the food on offer was some of the best I've had, with lots to choose from the buffet each breakfast and evening meal. Located next to the queens bar which is great for a pint after a days skiing or even in the resort centre, a two minute walk to happy hours offer 2.50 euros a pint. A great ski areas, that offers over 400km worth of skiing, kept us more than busy for the week. Was in a quad room and was very spacious, rooms cleaned daily. Would defnitely go again in the future! Don't agree with these poor reviews, it may not be your finest 4 star but for the price you pay, great holiday!

Just finishing a week at the Relais.
Overall, I would say a good experience.
The location is good for all parts of the town, with everything close.
The town is all on hills, some quite steep, so we are very glad of the ski bus which stops right outside the door and will take you either to the closest 'Clotes' lift or along a bit further to the 'Sportinia' lift.

Our room is on the first floor overlooking the entrance to the hotel. The room is nice and big including the bathroom which has loads of space. The shower is very nice - just right after a day skiing. No bath tub though, which is fine by us but may not suit everybody.
The maids keep the room very clean and tidy and we have needed for nothing.

The restaurant is a mixed bag.
The cold buffet is usually very good, as are the desserts.
The hot food we have found dissappointingly tasteless on most occasions.
The waiting staff are great - friendly and very efficient.

Because of the location of our room, there is quite a lot of noise at night. Mostly from people leaving the busy Queens Bar which is adjoined to the hotel. It wouldn't suit a young family for that reason. There are rooms higher up though which may be quieter.

I think if we came back to Sauze we may well choose the Relais again, which says it all really. We've had a great time ...thanks Relais.

Room Tip: 1st floor rooms are large and comfortable - but can be noisy at night.

Booked this through crystal and read some poor reviews but as a group we had a great time and couldn't fault the hotel the room was big and had everything you wanted tea coffee etc the bathroom was fine but no bath! The food was excellent and as fuel before or after ski there was always something on the buffet style counters for everyone. Great location 5 min walk to the ski lift or 5 min bus ride to the main sportina lift. Sauze is a lovely alpine village type resort and has some lovely bars shops etc. there is enough runs in the local area but with the full ski pass you'll never be bored. I love sauze and will be back

This was allegedly a 4 star Hotel and rated 4 by Crystal Holidays. It was very ordinary and no where near a four stars. The hot tub and sauna were not working all week and looked like they had not worked all year. We were continaully promised that it would be fixed. The food was buffet style and very average. If you were late, dishes ran out and were not replaced. They opened the retaurant early because a large number of people were checking out but there was no chef to cook eggs. The rooms very clean but of average quality.
