“Great place to stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 10, 2013

Just returned from a great week staying at the Stella Alpina with Caroline and her family. It's in an excellent position facing the slopes and offers warm, cosy, clean bedrooms and a good breakfast with plenty to eat.

The service is second to none and you are always made welcome when you arrive. As a group we have been numerous times and are never disappointed.

The bar is well stocked and comfortable and a good place to end the day after skiing

Location is perfect. Boot room is adjacent to the hotel and kit was good quality - certainly good enough for the "intermediate" Page family. You can fall onto the magic carpet up to the Clotes lift from this Hotel and Hire shop. One of our party is not adventurous with food and every evening Caroline would come and discuss what they could make different for her whilst we stuck with the menu which we really enjoyed. I think food is so subjective that unless it is of a poor quality it isn't worth commenting. If the hotel is reluctant to find something one does like - that is a different story. I don't think Caroline and her team could have done any more for us during our stay in terms of food comfort advice and help and for that reason alone I would give Stella top marks. Plenty of hot water, plenty of food, warm and comfortable with enough space, reasonably priced and perfectly positioned. What else does anyone want for a mid priced ski holiday? Keep up the good work Caroline and I would urge anyone who isn't happy about any aspect of their stay to engage with Caroline whilst they are there - seems fairer to give her a chance to make things better at the time?

Based on reviews from others, my family booked for a week at the Stella Alpina, Im not normally looking to find faults, but we expected 3+ Star as in the Neilson brochure
Firstly the Plus
The Hotel is in a perfect spot, bang at the bottom of the Clotes, easy access to/from Clotes & Sportinia lifts.
The owner Caroline is a really nice lady, as are the rest of the staff.
Nice hotel bar ( Scotch Bar ) looked after by a lovely lady from Finland.
Every Morning the breakfast was good, plenty of cheese, bread, ham, coffee, juice, cereals etc etc and had it not been for an ignorant German who thought he and his family owned the toasty machine and actually took peoples food out to replace with his own, it would have been perfect ( not the Hotels fault )
Ski Lockers are under the Ski shop next door :) heated, although we hired elsewhere, you can hire from them also.

Now some less positive comments :(
Twin bedded rooms were clean but very noisy, tiled floors made it sound like a family of travelling clog dancers were in the room above.
No tea/coffee making facilities, although some of the time, you could nip into the bar for a nice brew.
The food on the first couple of nights led us to think we would be ok, but it seemed to tail off a little, I dont understand why when Italians make the best Lasagne, spaghetti, pasta etc etc why we couldnt have that, instead veal in breadcrumbs, Pig shin, and overcooked fish, each accompanied by the same style potatoes. It wasnt bad, but it wasnt good either, which is such a shame as given a little more thought the Stella could be so much better.
We left early morning and all we were given was a chocolate Croissant and a coffee, a little bread, cheese and ham would have made all the difference.

This has been my second year in a row I have stayed at this hotel. Food is excellent and atmosphere in the bar very friendly. Yesterday we were treated to some beautiful local cheese along with our post ski drinks.

Fantastic stay at this lovely family ran hotel - Caroline & co. are so friendly & accomadating to all your needs.

The hotel is in a fantastic location - ski down to hotel door & straight into the Scotch bar for a great range of wines & beers & complimentary bar nibbles

The chef is fabulous - great choice every evening & wonderful child friendly meals too! It was great to retire into bar after dinner & play card games etc with our large group of adults & kids too

All in all a great place to stay on your ski holiday in this lovely village of Sauze D'oulx - thankyou Caroline for making us all so welcome - see you next year!

The hotel could not be better situated overlooking the Clotes chairlift.
We arrived late morning and our rooms were ready for us. Rooms vary in size, we were lucky to have a bath allowing me to have a good soak after a long day on the slopes. Room and hotel was very clean.
We were particularly impressed by the service we received in the reasteraunt. Choice of meals each night, with the possibility to choose something else if you didn't fancy what was on offer. I felt Meals were prepaired to a budget though.
Ski hire next door was very good and they had allocated heated spaces for your gear.
Ski area was excellent with easy access to the other resorts, relatively quiet too except for the weekend, when it gets very busy.
In summary good hotel great location, great skiing.

We stayed recently at the Hotel Stella Alpina and enjoyed a fantastic week with some of the best skiing that we have experienced.

Plus points:
Perfect location close to the Clotes lift. (Don't wear your skis on the magic carpet!)
Great après ski bar.
Fairly quiet rooms.
Very friendly and helpful staff.
Free use of the heated boot and ski locker with numbered storage allocated to each room.

Cons:
Limited wardrobe space.
Extra charge if you need to have your towels changed more than once in the middle of the week.
Typical continental breakfast with an extra charge for eggs!
Limited choice for the evening meal main course. Two choices are provided, one of which is vegetarian. However, the owner does offer alternatives if you don't like the main courses, which included omelettes and burgers.
In our opinion, although the food was edible, we wouldn't give what appeared to be overcooked 'shin of pork' to our dog!

Overall opinion:
We would return here for the location and all of the other plus points listed, but we would choose to dine out a few times. The skiing area is huge, well maintained and varied.

Thank you for taking time to write about us, just to clear up the negative points. We have had to put an extra charge for towels as its incredible how many people just leave towels on a heap on the floor every day (do they do this at home?), we seldom charge anyone but it does help as a detterent !
As for the comments about the food, as I have written before its very hard to please everyone all the time, but we try to do our best and we try to keep our prices low and give a good service. I'm sorry you didn't like the shin of pork, but I think your comment was unecessary, and its always a pity when guests don't tell you these things at the time but have to go home and publicise it to the world.
