“Well worth a visit”
Reviewed August 20, 2012

My wife and I first stayed at this hotel 2 years ago and selected it again for a two week vacation in August as it had impressed us first time around.
The location of the hotel in the centre of the old town is fantastic for being at the heart of all the summer events taking place and the ferry and bus stops for travelling around.
The hotel management and staff are excellent, being professional, friendly and courteous at all times. If you want genuine Italian cuisine take the half board option and enjoy excellent 4 course dinners created by the resident chef Antonio.
We had a fourth floor air conditioned room with a balcony facing the the old tower in the main square. The room was cleaned daily to the highest standard with towels replaced daily and toiletries replaced as required . Linen was changed every 2nd/3rd day.
Speaking to other guests from around Europe they too were impressed and said they would return.

Staff were great and location was fantastic being just a few minutes from the ferry port. The hotel was quiet and our room (408) had a good view of the lake. Definitely recommend it for its location.

Room was basic, air con seemed not to be on overnight which made sleep difficult and room did not really reflect the pics on their website, more of a travelodge feel than luxury hotel.

We arrived (it was our honeymoon) to find ourselves in a twin room. On complaining to reception we were told we had requested it (we hadn't) and that it was a "unique feature of the hotel" that they only had single beds. In the end they made it a double by pushing two singles together which was ok but we should really have been warned of this prior to booking.

Food in the restaurant was good but as other reviews have said, you are so close to the next table (10 cm) that you are pretty much sharing every meal with strangers - again, not fantastic for a honeymoon so we ate out a lot.

Good hotel for its location, size etc but not recommended as a special holiday, hotel made no effort to do anything nice knowing it was a special occasion despite a room upgrade and bottle of wine being mentioned in the brochure we booked through.

Definitely do not think this hotel is a 4*, if it was 3* our review would be much more positive but as a 4* it doesn't cut the mustard.

Room Tip: 408 has a lake view and close to a lift

Stayed in high season and enjoyed our stay overall but our review is based on vfm. We recommend b&b as we saw the restautant lacked ambience and there are tons of good & reasonable priced places to eat nearby.

+ve : very convenient location / staff helpful / quiet rooms

-ve : 3 star dressed up as 4 star / no child areas or pool / expensive

My wife and I just returned from a weeks holiday to this wonderful little hotel, wished we stayed for two weeks, wouldn't hesitate to return there. We took the half board option and couldn't complain at all. I would like to thank the management team and all staff for a brill holiday you have a little gem here..... turn left out the front and you soon come across a nice little cafe, 5 euros for two glasses of red which we used to visit every day and they gave you olives and nibbles to. This is our second visit to Lake Garda the first time was a few years ago with our children where we stayed down the south end of the lake in Portese very nice aswell. This will definately not be our last visit to a truly beautiful place.
Now i have to say we booked this holiday through Groupon and the travel company was Holidays booked.com, when we booked the holiday we checked the hotel out on this site and were aghast at the very negative reviews of this company so were not looking forward to the transfers.... but in all honesty when we arrived in Milan there was no one to meet us but a quick phone call and 30 mins later there was someone there to pick us up, and on the return there was no trouble in fact they arrived 15 min early and both very polite although they do overtake everything on the road, ok enough of me on my soapbox.
We will definately be coming back to Riva and the Hotel Antico Borgo.

Went for a week with the grown up children on a B&B basis. The staff were very helpful, meeting us off the coach to transport our bags to the hotel while we walked up.The breakfast was more than sufficient and the coffee to die for .The rooms were comfortable and very clean. While it was not on the water front we knew this prior to booking and it was minutes away from the water.

My husband and i spent a week at this resort from July 14th. Its a central location, although very close to the lake there was actually no lake views from any room which we were told about by our agency. we were a bit disappointed with our room as we didn't have much of a view and it was noisy and requested to change. the reception said there were no rooms available for the rest of the week - this is fine except we met another couple the day after who were in the same boat and got a room change immediately!
Housekeeping could use some attention as only select toiletries were replenished. we also had temperamental air con, shower fan and towel heater that didn't work.

Apart from those small gripes, the staff were polite and there was no shortage of food - although i would stay away from the salmon! table seating was a little too cozy and we were at the same table for all meals. Staff are happy to supply glasses for your own beverages to enjoy on the roof terrace (a pool would be perfect) and they also do a packed lunch on request for no extra charge.
