“Brione Hotel Lake Garda”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 17, 2013

More like an institution than a hotel. Very spartan, no pictures on the wall in the room, plastic beakers in the bathroom, thin cardboard hard towels provided. No coffee or tea making facility.

Set menu, evening meal had to be selected at breakfast. Three choices of starter and main meal. Food very poor. Staff over worked with just three staff to cope with approximately 100 guests.

No card transactions, only cash accepted.

Courtesy of Reiviera Travel.

Room Tip: Rooms to the rear, away from the main road

The location of the Brione is brilliant only a 5 minute walk from the lake side but the hotel itself is "tired". Rooms are a reasonable size but there were signs of mould in the bathroom, a musty smell that stayed with us all week, harsh fluorescent strip lighting above the beds, only one socket and blankets and towels that had seen better days. The food was adequate but rarely exciting; the salad bar hardly varied during the week and there was a fair degree of "stodge" that we have never experience before in Italy. The staff fell into two camps; some were charming and friendly but the others had trained with Basil Fawlty. They gave the impression of wanting you out of the dining room as fast as possible; bringing starters before giving you a chance to order drinks. The female staff on reception were great but one man in particular could have come straight from Fawlty Towers.

I'm sure there are much better 3 star hotels in Riva

We stayed at this hotel with Riviera Travel. Our room was lovely and quiet, overlooking the pool, we requested a room at the back of the hotel away from the noisy road. The hotel was spotless our room was serviced every day, we had a king sized bed with crisp white spotless sheets, the towels were changed each day. We had no complaints about the food, this is a 3* hotel so I don't know why some people expect gourmet meals. The staff were very friendly and helpful. During the week we had a candlelit gala night, which was very enjoyable, the food was very good and the service was excellent, the staff are very efficient and work very hard. We did eat out one evening, but this was because we were celebrating our wedding anniversary and wanted to do something special, and not a reflection on the hotel food. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Brione hotel and would definitely stay there again.

We stayed at the Brione for 7 nights, booking with Riviera Travel. Our room 203 was spotless with a balcony overlooking the road and the the mountains. A bit noisy for us as we are used to a quiet road with no noise. It was a good spot for people watching. The furnishings are rather tired. The whole room could do with a re-furb. 2 single beds which were pushed together to make a kingsize on our request. Spotless cotton sheets which were changed. Blankets rather than duvet, a tired blue bed cover, carpet worn and flat. There is a safe but no tea making facilities, so take your own with a plug adaptor.. No fridge. Only one plug socket, next to the TV (which we didn't use). Plenty of coat hangers in the wardrobe (smelt rather musty). The bathroom spotless with a shower, but could do with an update. No hooks to hang clothes, but I presume that was what the plastic stool was for. Hairdryer adequate, and I'm fussy about my hair. Lighting rather dim although there were 3 light bulbs on the mirror, it wasn't bright enough for applying makeup and the bedroom wasn't much better. Towels changed regularly but rather worn and thin.
Restaurant a basic room with tables for 4 persons, with a view over the garden. Food not gourmet, ok with 3 choices in the evening. Our guide, Werner, informed us the hotel grow their own vegetables, which were always fresh. Restaurant staff pleasant and are able to understand a little English. Wine waiter is a character and very helpful. The hotel ask you pay for your drinks in the restaurant each night before you leave. Cash only. Breakfast always plentiful with the usual meat egg bread croissant and fruit. Tea came with hot water in the pot and bags on the side.English breakfast blend similar to PG tips. Gala night was enjoyable with an elderly gent entertaining us with the keyboard and a variety of instruments. He was quite good, but played the predictable selection of tunes. Was able to dance in small cleared area of restaurant.
Pool was very cold but welcome after a day out. Sunbeds available. Area around pool attractive and spotless. No pool bar or shop. take a drink with you. Sun is lost behind the hotel mid afternoon and pool is shaded.
There is a room with books to read and swop and a computer which we were not made aware of until our last day by our guide. Something the reception should have told us, but they did not give info unless asked. The owner and wife ate in the restaurant in the evening - a good sign, but did not mix with the guests, and were rather aloof.
Hotel have bikes for hire at 5euros a day. My advice is check them out first before you commit. Our opinion is (and we cycle regularly in the UK) they are old, do not appear to be well maintained, with bald tyres and loose brakes. If you plan to go further than the car park - hire them elsewhere, around 15E a day.. You cannot try them for size as they are locked with the receptionist reluctant to unlock them . (We have told our tour guide). Cycle paths everywhere and a great experience to cycle in safety.
The hotel bar is basic but comfortable enough and the staff friendly. If you are teetotal the chances are water, orange juice, cola, lemonade or tea/coffee is your only option. Non alcoholic cocktails unavailable.
A 5 minute walk down the narrow road opposite finds the lake. This is the best feature of the hotel, the location.
In short you get what you pay for, 3* hotel with prices to match.

Room Tip: Quiet rooms - ask for a pool view, people watching ask for road view. All have balconies.

Very pleased with the very high standards of cleanliness of this Hotel. Our room was a decent size with adequate drawer and wardrobe space. The bathroom looked to be brand new and spotlessly clean. We had a decent balcony on two sides of the room ! If you want a "full English Breakfast" then stay in England! This was definitely a Continental breakfast with cereals, fruit, cold meats, cheeses and yogurts but not cooked bacon, eggs etc, which meant no lingering cooking smells! A menu for the evening meal was presented for your choice at breakfast time and the meals were very well cooked and tasty ( and I'm quite a fussy eater!) All the staff were pleasant and helpful and we were always greeted with a smile.. We were given a room key AND a door key to use after 11p.m. when the front door was locked ,an indication that the building was pleasantly quiet at night. The Hotel itself was a two minute walk from the lake and there are frequent buses to take you to other towns around the area. I would highly recommend this hotel to singles and families alike, it is wonderful!!

Like some of the other reviewers we stayed there as part of a holiday with Riviera Travel.
Some of the guests comments must have been acted upon as the food was perfectly acceptable and on some nights very good indeed. Be aware that they will ask you for €15 plus for their table wine, which may or may not be in order, we drank mineral water with our meals and patronised the bar afterwards. The Staff were all very friendly, courteous and helpful and made us all very welcome. The room, though on the small side, was beautifully clean and well serviced. The rooms at the rear of the hotel are smaller but quieter and those on the front larger but may be subject to a little noise. Generally a decent Italian 3* Hotel and we would have no qualms about re-visiting.

Room Tip: The rooms at the rear of the hotel are smaller but quieter and those on the front larger but may be...

We have also just returned from the same holiday to Lake Garda with Riviera Travel and we too must agree with the complaints about the food at the Brioni Hotel. We too ate out on one occasion because there was nothing on the menu that we fancied. We ate dinner in the hotel restaurant 6 day of the 7 and our party of 4 all agreed that it was the worst food that we have ever experienced. We really cannot understand how they could ruin good food. As has been previously mentioned, all the food was overcooked, dry and unpalatable and accompanied by the most vile vegetables you could ever imagine. On one occasion we had to ask what the meat was and on another we could not believe it was pork despite this being on the menu. The wine was nice though, but that was in bottles. The head waiter was dashing in and out of the kitchen when he should have been directing his staff who were serving people haphazardly and on more than one occasion I had to get up from the table to ask for service.
Breakfast was Continental with the usual rolls, meats, cheeses, but there was cereals and a selection of fruit, which made it quite palatable although the serving staff were still disorganised.
However, on a positive note, the ladies on reception were extremely friendly, the hotel was immaculately clean as was our room, which was clean and tidy at all times. We were very satisfied with our room, which had a balcony with a magnificent view of the mountains, although I noticed, from the outside, that some rooms were not as suitably sited. The hotel had a pool, which was kept immaculately clean as was the area and gardens around it.
Riviera Travel did a wonderful job of organising the trips and our tour guide ensured that the coach and guides were all in position at the allotted time for our tours. She phoned ahead to ensure that services and destinations were expecting us. She ensured that everyone knew what to do, where to meet, where to go and she was always available for us whenever we wanted her. She was a mine of information and we learned such a lot wherever we went. The organised trips around the lake Garda, around the mountains, to Venice, to Verona and across the lake was wonderful and the area in which the hotel was situated was ideally placed to walk to the lake and Riva del Garda town, with restaurants and shops in easy access. We met lots of nice people on this holiday and we had a wonderful time; it was just a shame that it was marred by the food in the Brioni Hotel and it would be this that would deter us from going there again.

Room Tip: Book bed and breakfast and eat lunch and dinner out. Room 410 is a good room.
