Owner description: The Bastione, a tower of grey stone, located at the foot of Mount Rocchetta, is one the symbols of Riva del Garda, overlooking the city and Lake Garda. It was built in the early XVI century, just after the end of Venetian domination over Riva. It was destroyed in 1703 by the French troops under leadership of general Vendôme, who mined the main body thus rendering it unusable. It’s a few minutes walk from the port of Riva, along a road that winds through the black pinewood of the lower Rocchetta. The path then rises further to the chapel of St. Barbara on the mountainside (610m) and the Rocchetta itself (1520m). The Bastione has recently been restored. Visitors may see the imposing external bodywork and what is left of the inside from a winding staircase. The locations enjoys an excellent view.

The path to the Bastion is steep but not as hard as it appears from ground level. The views from the top over the harbour and town are great and the café a welcome opportunity to relax. The building itself is interesting..a pity there's no explanation/information boards

Walked up here early one morning on the way to Santa Barbara. Not much at the castle when you get here. The walk up is in the trees so not great views but nice views of lake and town once you are there.

I had to stop about four times to rest! There are benches on route and fab views. At the top there is a little café and seating area. It's great to see all the terracotta roof tops.

Fantastic views of the lake, it's not an easy walk especially in hot temperatures. My advice would be to go early in morning when it's cooler & quieter. The Bastion itself is perfect for photo opportunities and if your feeling fit you can continue climbing to Santa Barbara Church - I didn't but my husband did and the photos looked amazing.

Some say it's 20 minutes....it's about 30 - 40 but worth the hike. The views are spectacular and there is a nice cafe to while away the time while having a nice cooling drink. There is a second stage up to the Santa Barbara church, which is higher up the mountain and looks steep.... there I've given it away, yes I stopped at the Bastion with a nice cold Paulaner Beer... maybe next year
