Review of The Bastion

The Bastion

Owner description: The Bastione, a tower of grey stone, located at the foot of Mount Rocchetta, is one the symbols of Riva del Garda, overlooking the city and Lake Garda. It was built in the early XVI century, just after the end of Venetian domination over Riva. It was destroyed in 1703 by the French troops under leadership of general Vendôme, who mined the main body thus rendering it unusable. It’s a few minutes walk from the port of Riva, along a road that winds through the black pinewood of the lower Rocchetta. The path then rises further to the chapel of St. Barbara on the mountainside (610m) and the Rocchetta itself (1520m). The Bastione has recently been restored. Visitors may see the imposing external bodywork and what is left of the inside from a winding staircase. The locations enjoys an excellent view.

“Great walk, great view, welcome cafe too.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 27, 2012

Accessed along a steep, winding paved road, the Bastion offers superb views of Riva and Lake Garda. There is a cafe and toilets too, clean and good value.

The building itself looks to have been recently restored and consolidated, it is safe to explore by the steps and handrails provided.

This is a landmark which can be seen by day and is illuminated at night and anyone who visits Riva should visit it. Above this is a small chapel accessed along a steep track, not for the faint hearted!

“Great views!”

Loved it, it's well worth the walk up and it was nice to have a cool drink and a rest before the walk down. The paths are very even and there are plenty bench seats along the way.

“Well worth a visit”

No one should go to Riva del Garda & not visit the Bastione to enjoy views to die for. Don't forget the camera and be prepared to take plenty of photographs

“Gentle Walk from Riva”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 20, 2012

Nice walk from Riva upto the Bastion. Took about 30 mins and the views were lovely. You could try and bike it but quite steep on the corners. There ia a wee snack shop at the top to quench your thirst and you will most likely need to.
