“Some strange anomalies with previous reviews.”
Reviewed November 19, 2013

We booked into this bed and Breakfast house for one night at a rate of 99 euros. This seemed an appropriate price for what was offered. It is close to the centre of Ragusa , the old part, and an easy walk into the main square. Parking is free, on the road adjacent to the hotel, and can be a short walk (2min) to the car. There is temporary parking space opposite the hotel for dis-embarking luggage etc. On our arrival, the receptionist was very helpful, giving maps and directions to places of interest and a genuine welcome .
Our room was on the first floor, reached by a set of stairs that appear to be carved out of the rock face; quirky, not easy to climb/descend but not too difficult and in reality quite a charming feature.
The room itself was spacious with a spacious en-suite, clean, tidy, and usual quality trimmings.
The bed was large, comfy and with crisp white linen sheets!
The breakfast room is small, with four tables, but we were the only people eating at the time we went , with breakfast being served from 7.30 to 11.00 I would feel unlucky if all seats were taken.
My two slight niggles were: the price of the mini-bar goods made me stop and think whether I really needed anything out of it, and the advertised free internet service was not available. The reaction from the night receptionist gave me the impression that it was a known fault and that nobody could be bothered to fix it.
All in all, I would go back to the hotel again.

Looking over the reviews written about this place, many seem to be at negative variance with our own experience (a lovely PR way of putting it) - and we were there for two weeks beginning August 2013. First the price. We paid £1900 in the high season for a double room which was for myself and my 15 year old daughter. This is well into the upper half of alternative accommodation price bracket. It's four star you might say.

We wanted a hotel in Ragusa Ibla so that we were in easy walking distance of everywhere, especially the main square, the Piazza Duomo San Georgio dominated by its high, baroque church. For Ragusa ibla is a place to see and admire on foot, to take in its magnificent baroque architecture, to participate in the relaxed way of Sicilian life especially during the hot afternoons. This older Ragusa is to be distinguished from the newer Ragusa Superior built close by after the massive earthquake which flattened much of ibla at the end of the seventeenth century.

In ibla wherever you walk it is always uphill so I don't recommend the place for anyone with a weak heart! That also applies to this quirky hotel with its steep flight of stairs hewn out of the limestone rock though there is an alternative route 'round the back' but it's quite a hike if you want to pop 'upstairs' after breakfast!

The staff at Locanda Don Serafino were to a man, exceptional. This is especially so after we'd had a car accident, fortunately close by (no one else involved, no one hurt, it was those damn narrow streets - you have been warned!), and on our way to check in after driving over from Catania!! It meant we arrived shortly after midnight. Everyone was fantastic! This included the hotel's owner! They could not do enough!

Our air conditioned room was good and cleaned to a daily high standard. We'd booked bed and breakfast. The breakfast was typical Sicilian with plenty of hot, Sicilian coffee, Palma ham by the bucket load, cornflakes, freshly squeezed orange juice, toast, various cold meats and fantastic marmalade made by the hotel's chef. For me it was the perfect start to the day.

The various receptionists were faultless and booked many of our evening restaurants. Not to mention helping me arrange another car to replace the one I'd broken during my arrival!!

Finally, if like me, you are a Montalbano nut then this hotel is at least at the centre of one episode of 'The Young Montalbano', the episode entitled 'New Years Eve' (its probably now available on DVD). Much of the location shooting was literally shot on the doorstep!!

Go and enjoy! And don't be picky.

Room Tip: Although I think all rooms are air conditioned, make sure you have it because in August it can get v...

This is a lovely, lovely building in side. But staff are poor. The girl on the reception isn't interested in helping you out with anything! She was more interested in her personal calls and smoking. And wasn't the least bit smiley! We asked for hot tea in the evening one day and it was revolting! B'fast is poor compared to all the other hotels we stayed in. The lady who serves is lovely but food is poor. I liked my room but the nightmare steps where tiresome. Getting into the centre was a good walk with my mum who finds it hard to walk. Liked my room. And soft pillows where a god send!

Room Tip: Very, very step steps to rooms which are charming but very, very difficult for some people.

The Locanda Don Serafino is a mixed bag and I'm not surprised to read the spectrum of reviews here from 'paradise' down to 'nightmare'. My wife and I stayed there for two nights early Sept.2013. The room itself (no.6) was a very fun a quirky two-level "suite" that had the sleeping and shower-room on one level and the 'living room' and bathtub (!) on another level. We found this very amusing, but slightly crazy at the same time.

The staff are a bit indifferent. The people working the front desk weren't particuarly warm or welcoming. They were simply doing their job. The doorman/porter wasn't much more enthusiastic and I was disappointed to find him doubling as a waiter at the hotels one-Michelin-starred restaurant. The woman organizing the breakfast (in a dining area that is too small) was very nice. She doubles as a chambermaid in the late mornings and afternoons.

This is a small hotel (10 rooms only), but feels it still feels like its struggling with day-to-day operations. I say this because the staff just don't seem very cheerful or dedicated to what they're doing.

Tne location is good - about a 6 or 7 minute walk into the main square/piazza of Ragusa Ibla. Traffic and street pedestrian noise is a nuisance in the evenings and mornings, not due to the numbers of people, but the narrowness of the street which still has vehicles rattling up and down, and for the locals shouting their hellos and goodbyes Sicilian style (loud). To enjoy the hotel you have to be willing to accept these eccentricities or you're probably not going to like the place. It may claim to be 4 star - but much of the star systems outside of France are very arbitrary and undependable. In Paris this is a 2-star hotel. In Rome it is a 3 star. Sadly, for Sicily, it probably is a 4-star - and that's part of the problem.

Would I stay here again? Probably not. Would I recommend it? Only to those able to laugh at the quirks and see some fun in it. Would I recommend it as a "luxury" place to stay? No.

Room Tip: Note that many of the rooms are split-level. Note that there is no elevator/lift and the main stairs...

Hotel review

The management at this hotel need a big wake up call. Supposedly 4 star, they are falling way short of the expected standard. It is in a lovely old building and could be much better although some problems, like traffic noise would persist. However providing a very poor breakfast , when you have a Michelin starred restaurant will not do. Out of season fruit in poor condition when superb local fresh fruit is widely available; disappointing cereal choice with no muesli or granola; sad selection of pastries and a measly cup of coffee made from a sachet of powder from a machine-in Italy!!!! The furniture in the room, which was their best suite, was shabby and badly stained. The safe was locked when we arrived, so we couldn't use it and took over 24 hours for staff to open it. The bath drained very very slowly. The whole room badly needed painting. The window box contained one nearly dead plant and numerous cigarette ends. Oh and there is a cassette player in the room but no wifi. Staff were mostly very friendly and helpful but no one senior was visible at any time. Most of these problems could be easily fixed if anyone cared.

We are sorry to read your words and apologize for you disappointed experience but we would like point out that the “sad pastries” are make by our chef to offer a quality product and not some commercial cake or snack that you can find everywhere. Take a note the rest of your complaint to fix and improve its.
In years, Italy has specialized into coffee pod production to offer quality product at small enterprises as our supplier, acknowledge with Fairtrade and Kosher certification.
We are surprise reading your reviews which describe our hotel like a nightmare because you has never complaint during the stay.

.I do it only write again, because we do not agree with some very negative reviews of this hotel.
we liked the hotel, the room, yes the stairs were a bit difficult, but it is an old building.
we did like the breakfast, served by a very kind italian lady, who does not speak english.
the breakfastroom is not very big, but then you should not go to a hotel of only 11 rooms, expecting all the amenities of a 100 room hotel, when you choose this charming small hotel..

so we did not have the complaints of other reviewers!
the restaurant, 10 minutes walk away, was wonderful, not cheap ,but really exellent food.
the beach , 20 minutes drive ,was very nice with a very good restaurant
the town is a dream with all the beautiful baroque palaces.(Ragusa Ibla)
