“Beautiful hotel...wonderful food”

This is a very special hotel. The staff couldn't have been more helpful and the atmosphere and surrounding scenery are spectacular. Sitting in the courtyard sipping prosecco at sunset is truly a wonderful experience. The rooms were elegant and the food absolutely delicious.

We recently returned from a two week stay at the Eremo. It was a truly memorable holiday: the hotel surpassed our very high expectations in all respects. The style and elegance of the place was equally matched by the kindness and attentiveness of the staff for whom nothing was too much trouble. We ate in the restaurant several times and really enjoyed the combination of authentic Sicilian flavours and haute cuisine flair. The hotel is family run and this is reflected in the attention to detail and the warmth of the welcome that guests receive. The location is perfect - just 15 minutes from the delightful Baroqure town of Ragusa Ibla in one direction, and 20 minutes down to the seaside resort of Marina di ragusa in the other. Both places were very quiet at this time of year and we would love to return in the summer to see them come alive.
This hotel is an absolute gem - a piece of paradise set in a fascinating region of Sicily.

Quite honestly, the second we walked in the front door, I knew this was my kind of place. It's almost like walking into a cozy castle. The service from the front desk to the bellboy was always gracious and friendly. Our room was spacious and full of character. The antique furniture, woven rugs, and dark-beamed ceiling all added so much old-world charm to the room. The breakfast buffet was not only beautifully laid out, but tasted great as well. The dinners were wonderful--I especially recommend the onion soup, norma pasta, and the best creme brule I've had the pleasure to taste. We spent most evenings down by the fireplace enjoying drinks and the great little tray of goodies that came along with them. The area around Ragusa is full of great little towns and country drives into the mountains nearby. It's clean and safe, and the people in SE Silicy seem to take special pride in their lovely surroundings. My husband, son, and I will definitely be back!! One final comment for pilots: we flew in from Malta and landing in their airfield was incredibly convenient; it is literally a 30 second drive to the hotel, but one must be experienced in short field landings.

We chose this place for a last week away before our first baby arrived and were delighted with it. It's beautifully converted, the pool and garden area were lovely, the service was consistently excellent all week, and the rooms (we had booked one if the cottages but a monster thunderstorm had knocked out the electricity) were spotless, although the one in the main hotel it was mall enough to remind you of its original purpose as a monk's cell.

Breakfast was sumptuous - by far the best I've ever had in Italy. When it came to dinner, though, we both thought it tried just a little too hard to be different. That ridiculously minor quibble is the worst thing I can say. Overall, I'd recommend it very warmly to anyone.

In mid-September my wife and I spent four nights at Eremo della Giubiliana, a small luxury hotel just outside of Ragusa. The property is a beautifully restored 12th – 16th century Convent/fortified rural home. Its location, about 15 minutes from Ragusa, 30 minutes from Modica and 30 minutes from Scicli, makes it a perfect spot for exploring these fascinating Sicilian towns, and enjoying the range of dining opportunities in all three. Our spacious and stunning room (picture attached) was a remarkable combination of 12th, 16th and 21st century attributes.

The service, however, was a little rough around the edges for €400 + per night accommodations. On our first evening, the shower spewed a fine clay-like substance all over me. My towel was completely covered in brown. I completed my shower with bottled water. The front desk staff was polite, but didn’t seem overly concerned that one of their guests had been covered in mud while showering, and offered differing explanations of the cause (“the well”, “the pipes”, “we have it checked and it’s not dangerous”!) It did not happen again during our stay, though it did have us constantly checking the shower and the sinks, and brushing our teeth with bottled water.

As part of our package, our room had a fruit basket and a bottle of the Hotel’s own wine. Upon returning to our room at the end of our second day – and looking forward to the bottle of wine – we discovered that the untouched fruit and wine had disappeared. When we inquired at the front desk, a somewhat mystified employee told us “you didn’t use it, so we removed it”. We requested that it be returned right away, but waited for several hours as we prepared for dinner. It arrived as we were leaving the room, as the front desk had forgotten to send it.

On our third day, we returned to the room to discover that the wine and fruit were once again missing. We inquired at the front desk, and once again the wine and fruit were delivered, this time quickly. We decided to open the wine, which was in fact excellent, lest it disappear a third time. Not a big deal, in fact almost comical, but certainly not what one expects in a five star hotel.

The service in the otherwise elegant dining room was also lacking, and it appeared to be understaffed and/or staffed by inexperienced personnel, at least during our one dinner experience there. The food was quite good nonetheless, but served in a hurried, frenetic, almost chaotic manner.

With all of these negative comments about service, I must add that on our third and fourth days, there was a change in the front desk staff and we were given very helpful advice and recommendations by Angelo. We also met and were given additional excellent recommendations by the very charming Gianna Nifosi, one of the owners. So, on balance, we do recommend Eremo della Giubiliana – beautiful accommodations and strategic location for exploring key Sicilian towns. Hopefully service will improve in the dining room and at the front desk. We would give it three and one-half stars, but alas we are limited to either three or four.

Room Tip: Suite Della Guardia

My wife and I stayed here for 4 nights as part of a longer stay in Sicily in May 2011. We loved this South Eastern corner of Sicily with the historic towns, beautiful churches and dramatic landscapes. The hotel was very well located to visit all the sights including as far away as Syracusa on the East coast.
The hotel was certainly better than average but this is my overall score due to the fact that the bedroom was too small for the price and the dining a little bit too precious, not at all typical of the wonderful genuine Sicilian food we ate elsewhere.
The maitre d was charming and very informative, the old monastry building was beautiful and the grounds lovely. However, the atmosphere at the hotel was not very Sicilian, being just a bit too exclusive. The hotel was over priced.

We stayed in one of Eremo's converted shepherds' cottages which are right next to a private runway (although much to our disappointment we didn't witness a Cessna landing!). Very well designed studio apartment with lovely BBQ area, small kitchen area & separate bathroom, along with two sun beds in the small garden. The cottages are a 5 minute walk (or 2 minute bike ride) from the hotel which itself has been beautifully restored. The staff are really pleasant and helpful. On our final night we treated ourselves to their "tasting" menu which was absolutely superb. We are keen foodies & thought we would be disappointed but not a bit of it. At 65 Euros each, yes on the pricey side, but that included all drinks and our glasses kept on being refilled. Wonderful atmosphere with very attentive service. Well placed for trips to Siracusa, Noto & Ragusa Ibla. Only 2 things stopped me from giving this a 5* rating: I had to ask for a kettle for the cottage - I think that should be standard 2. The swimming pool is very small although you're only 15 minutes away from the coast & the hotel has access to a private beach.
