We were the only ones there and the service was notable by its absence, and things didn't improve when some other groups arrived. I think the waiter and the chef were the only ones working that day since it was off season (February) - if you don't mind that or you go when they have more staff on hand, you should have a good meal as we did - nice local fare, especially the antipasti.

We included Ragusa Ibla on our Sicily itinerary in November to see Baroque architecture. We plan to include Ragusa Ibla on our next trip as a food destination, to dine once again at the unexpectedly fabulous Federico II.

We wandered into Federico II the evening we arrived in Ragusa Ibla because it smelled interesting when we opened the door and they were willing to seat us for dinner at the early hour of 7:45. Antonio, the owner, took us to our table and, after a conversation, chose our dishes for us. The meal started with the best caponata we had in Sicily, and that includes Gagini in Palermo. The eggplant and other ingredients were still distinct in appearance and flavor yet also bound together by a complex common essence, cooked separately first and then cooked slowly together with wine, not vinegar. It was ethereal, not heavily laden with oil the way caponata often is. Next, we had two fresh pastas: ravioli and cavatelli with a pork sugo. The chef at Federico II is Antonio’s wife, and her fresh pasta is extraordinary. The ravioli was stuffed with fresh ricotta made from Ragusa milk (which has a sweet and slightly herbal flavor) and was covered with a light tomato sauce made from the best of their summer tomato crop. The pork sugo had the deep flavor of slow-cooked pork of the highest quality and was light, not fat-laden, revealing a high level of finesse in the kitchen. What can I say? I would be willing to eat both of these pastas once a month for the rest of my life.

We ate at Federico II twice more during our week at Ibla, and every dish was superior and many extraordinary, like the pepata cotte (peppered mussels) and spaghetti con le sarde made with a perfect ratio of golden crisp breadcrumbs to pasta and sardines. The prices were more than reasonable.

We had to wait A LOT for our food, although the restaurant was empty the time we were there, and we were siting with children.
The fish ravioli was good but very small.
The egplant-ricotta ravioli was too sweet but still good. This was also a very small dish.
We waited a lot to get very litlle food. The good taste of the dishes didn't compensate...

Regional specialities and a nice smile from the servant guaranteed in this restaurant with a medieval touch.

Despite the service was bit slow, I really enjoyed the dining experience.

Wonderful Sicilian food and lots of courtesy.

Try the ravioli and the caponata!

We arrived in Ragusa expecting to have lunch in a restaurant recommended by other travellers, but found it closed for vacation. The Federico II was just down the street and announced a typical Sicilian menu that tempted us. Nice decor, quiet restaurant and street outside, good Sicilian food (especially the desserts) and extremely friendly service. If I return to this restaurant, it will be for the service...
