“A lovely peaceful gem!”
Reviewed July 12, 2013

Slightly out of season in April but was excellent just the same. The staff were very friendly and polite and breakfast was excellent - do go there to lose weight!. Excellent pool area where we ate our own food a couple of times - no problem with staff. Shame there is no restaurant but we found a good restaurant in the nearby Domus Aurea Resort. They were doing some improvement works while we were there but as they started after we finished breakfast and were finished by the time we got back in the evening it did not bother us. A car is essential if you intend to travel around.

The place is a little way out of town and, whilst there are signposts, it's as well to have your satnav working to ensure that you arrive without too much trouble. There is also no restaurant so you will need to drive ( or take a cab) to get to a restaurant if you wish to have a meal out in the evening.

Having spent over a week travelling around sights of Sicily, we chose this hotel as an out-of-town location for a more restful couple of nights. We got a warm welcome from reception on arrival and the room had a rustic style but with modern facilities. The staff were all very courteous and helpful. The breakfast was delightful, particularly the patisseries, and the pool area was wonderful for refreshing oneself after a hot day of sight-seeing. Just a pity it doesn't have a restaurant.

It is a good base for travelling out to the SE of Sicily. Unfortunately we were woken at 7.20am on our second morning by a road breaker some 100m or more away which meant that everyone was early for breakfast and we were on our way to Siracusa earlier than expected.

We are a couple which travels allot along the coast of the Mediterranean sea.
We very much enjoyed our stay in the Artenmisia hotel.
A quite and pleasant hotel not far from the beautiful sandy beaches of Sicily.
The hotel is located in the south western part of the island, a very quiet location.
The hotel is clean and the hospitality is great.
The staff are polite and professional
We didn't miss a thing at the hotel and every request was filled right away.

A very pleasant place to stay

Very impressive resort on the outskirts of Ragusa - car essential. Staff are superb, nothing is too much trouble. Massive pool with an underwater gym....

One minor negative - sound proofing between rooms cannot cope with loud Italian TV programmes

Room Tip: not room 9...above breakfast room

We booked a couple of days last month at short notice, encouraged by the fantastic reviews on here. Thanks TA, it was a delight. The greeting could not be warmer and the room was large, comfortable, clean and tasteful. There was a little welcoming carafe of local wine with snacks, which was a lovely touch, and (please note fellow Brits) the kettle and selection of teas was a nice surprise. Bathroom was huge with a great shower and nice toiletries, and the bucolic location makes for a wonderful nights sleep.

Breakfast was fantastic, the usual you would expect, with eggs and bacon, plus a tempting variety of home baked sweet treats. Between sightseeing activities we managed some time by the stunning pool (with spa) and had a huge amount of fun taking a spin on their vintage bicycle rickshaw. Bikes are also available, plus gym equipment and barbecue facilities.

All of this is enough for us to consider Artemisia the loveliest of all hotels we stayed in during our Sicilian trip. However, the utter charm and helpfulness of the team here take the resort into a different league. They simply cannot do enough to make your stay pleasurable. Our last morning was my birthday and the girls came out onto the terrace singing Happy Birthday with the most beautiful cake you could ever wish for. It was a joyful end to a short but perfect stay and a memory I will always cherish.

We are loathe to make any criticism of this place, but you do really need a car as there is no restaurant on site. However, they have not been open long and we understand that they are planning to build one, which will then truly make the Artemisia the perfect retreat. We would love to return for a longer stay in a year or two to see how the resort, and the gardens, have blossomed.

If you can't already guess, we cannot recommend the Artemisia and their hospitality highly enough. Book here if you can.

We stayed at Artemisia for two weeks at the beginning of June. Our plan was to base ourselves in what promised to be an interesting area of Sicily, and to enjoy the benefits of culture, sea, sand, countryside and peace. All our expectations were met- and more. Artemisia was comfortable, calm and so welcoming, and the staff were totally professional and utterly pleasant and warm.
Breakfast was excellent- yes, we got very used to eating a range of delicious home-baked cakes and tarts for breakfast, with freshly made coffees, in addition to fruit, eggs, bacon etc, with a variety of breads and croissants. There was also a constant supply of home-made jams, local honeys, and local delicacies to enjoy. We rarely needed lunch! Freshly made coffee was always available on request.
We especially enjoyed exploring Ragusa Ibla, and returned on several evenings to eat at trattoria which were recommended by the well informed staff. Eating out every night can become a chore, however, and we decided to try the barbeque at Artemisia, which was most enjoyable. The staff prepared the charcoal etc, and provided condiments, oil and vinegar etc, so all we had to do was buy our food in the local supermarket- and this turned out to be a treat. Do have a go if you stay here. The food was delicious, and the prepared table under a spreading carob tree just perfect to relax and drink the local wine after the sun set.
The pool area is one of the best we have ever experienced, and was meticulously maintained. The setting is tranquil, surrounded by rose gardens and peace.
We slept well in our spacious, airy room, waking to the sound of birds and cattle- utter peace.

From the moment we arrived unti the moment we left 8 days later, the thing that really stands out about the Artemisia is how great the people who work there are. They are unfailingly cheerful, friendly and helpful. In particular, for us, Valentina deserves a special mention. She made a number of dinner suggestions and reservations for us, all of which were very good. She also helped with printing boarding cards and arranged for us to have an early breakfast on our last day for which we are very grateful.

We had 'the residence' which is a detached cottage of stone, slightly apart from the main building. It has a double bed on a mezzanine level, and on the ground floor a spacious living room, with sofa bed, dining table and chairs and a kitchenette. There is also a very nice shower room. On arrival there were little gifts of wine and some pasta and pesto in case we didn't feel like eating out on our first night. Everything was spotless, our towels and sheets were changed every day too.

Breakfast is a very good spread of breads, croissants, many different cakes, cheeses, ham, salami, fresh fruit etc. There was also freshly squeezed orange juice on request, in addition to the usual carton variety.

The pool area is well appointed and kept very clean. A great place to relax. For the more energetic there are exercise bikes, 'normal' bikes and even an underwater bike and treadmill. In fact there is also a four seater carriage style bike that kept some of the noisier English children occupied and away from the pool area (a blessed relief).

The hotel is well located to tour the South East of Sicily, including the many Montalbano locations and you can even get a guide from the hotel on where some of the more famous scenes were shot. You would need a car to travel out to eat in the evening and it's worth noting the hotel doesn't have a restaurant.

Finally it's a really quiet spot with no road noise. We would certain return.
