“Amazing Experience, Easily the Best Hotel in Praiano”
Reviewed August 21, 2010

Our Background: Young married couple (late 20s) that enjoys travelling well. Spent 5 nights on the Amalfi Coast.

Our Goals: Price Range – 300-400 euros/night. High quality hotel, beautiful views, great service, large rooms

Hotel Strengths: Amazing views, beautifully decorated, excellent attentive service, medium sized (intimate, but full service)

Hotel Weaknesses: No beach, Town of Praiano is inconvenient compared to Amalfi and Positano

Other hotels to consider: Grand Hotel Il Saraceno (Amalfi), Covo dei Saracena (Positano), Miramalfi Hotel (Amalfi), Hotel Poseidon (Positano), Hotel Luna Convento (Amalfi)

Comments: My wife and I were looking for a high quality hotel on the Amalfi Coast for approximately 300-400 euros/night. We think Casa Angelina fit the bill very well. Casa Angelina is a beautiful, relatively new, boutique hotel in the town of Praiano. The views from the rooms and the pool area are amazing. You get an unobstructed elevated view of the Mediterranean in front and views of the town of Positano off in the distance to the right. Waking up and seeing these views were a great way to start the day.

The service at the hotel is excellent. The front desk and concierge were available at all times and were extremely attentive and focused on making each guests experience enjoyable. Coming from the U.S. and not knowing anyone who vacationed on the coast to receive advice from, I heavily relied on the Casa Angelina staff for advice on restaurants/activities and to assist us plan excursions and for our transportation needs. The staff was extremely helpful and eloquent and assisted our every need. They also happily decorated our room with candles and flowers one night per my request.

The pool area is small, with only about a dozen beds and the pool is only about 20 feet by 10 feet, but it wasn’t ever an issue. We actually liked the intimate feeling of the hotel. Casa Angelina is a full service hotel, but small enough that every guest receives the highest attention.

The only real criticism of the hotel I have is that it advertises that there is a beach in Praiano and it is accessible from the hotel. The reality is that the “beach” is nothing more than a cement platform with beds for people to sunbathe on. The sea is a few feet below the cement edge and very people actually get into the water because it is quite dangerous. The “beach” is also over 200 steps below the hotel so it is very exhausting to climb back up to the hotel.

The town of Praiano is also inconveniently located. It is 15 minutes east of Positano and 30 minutes west of Amalfi. Positano and Amalfi both have harbors and beaches and are much more easily accessible and developed than Praiano. That said, part of the charm of Praiano is that it is remote and away from all the tourists, shops and activity. And hotels are significantly less expensive because it is in a small town. We were willing to sacrifice convenience in order to get a higher quality hotel, but it can become a grind to get to shops and restaurants, which are primarily located in Positano and Amalfi.

Stayed for two nights at the end of a two week Italian trip that started in Tuscany and ended on the Amalfi coast. There is no doubt that this is a beautiful hotel - buts its definitely not perfect and for the price you pay, it should be.

Our room was very spacious and with superb views of Positano. Could not fault the room or the maid service which was immaculate. We returned each evening to little chocolates, flower petals on the bed and glowing candles. We also booked through Mr and Mrs Smith which meant we recieved a bottle of champers and a candle to take home too. L'Occitane toiletries were a nice touch.

But it also has to be said that the hotel is not to everyone's taste - I thought the minimalist decor was very calming and tranquil, while it really unnerved my husband who felt 'as if I'm taking part in a scientific experiment' !

The pool was tiny, more of a bath if I'm honest, and there weren't enough sun loungers for the number of guests staying at the hotel.

We did not really spend too much time here and that is a shame when you are spending this much on a hotel. The concrete beach is terrible, yes you get a lounger and a towel but I was practically cheek to cheek with the lady beside me and the sea looked rather scummy and uninviting. There is a much prettier beach with crystal clear water at the other end of Praiano, a 15-20 min walk away from the hotel, with a wonderful trattoria called Armandinos - the owner is charming - where we had a lovely lunch (and actually breakfast too on one day - espresso, latte, croissants for two for 5 euros total compared with the extortionate 25 euro PER PERSON rate at the hotel. Some may not find this ludicrous but I cannot comprehend what one person can possibly consume for breakfast that would make you feel this price tag was worth it).

We ate at Il Brace which was good (would opt for the wood fired pizzas over the pasta) and had drinks at a very sweet wine bar in the village (next door to Il Brace) with a very knowledgeable owner and wonderful bar snacks that included delicious salamis and mussels, gratis!

Would definitely recommed staying in Praiano over Positano which was worth a visit but looked manic and not very relaxing - although overall there are probably better places to stay that Casa Angelina for this price.

You pay a lot for the view at this hotel and I am not sure it is worth it. A clean, crisp white design throughout gives it a contemporary feel and allow the views to shine through. And what a view it is over to Positano and Capri in the distance. We found Praiano a better town than Positano, quieter and some lovely places to eat and drink.

The room itself was small and as mentioned by others, we had a relaxing suite and when standing on the balcony a great view, but sit on the lounger and view the wall. Also your next door neighbours were on top of you and really could walk into your area. For the price you are paying, I would have expected a larger room as there was not even a seat to sit on apart from the desk chair. The bathroom was tiny (but did have good products on offer). The room was also quiet noisy with a lot of noise from the hotel and other rooms travelling through the walls.

The 25 euro for breakfast was a rip off given prices and quality in town for lunch and dinner, and have paid much lesser for better.

We used the fitness centre and I have to say with only one treadmill and cross trainer they could lose some of the other machines and have an extra couple of these. We ended up using the indoor pool because it was empty and the outdoor pool was full. We headed down the beach to catch the water taxi and eat at the cafe (not part of the hotel) down there, as mentioned by others it is a long way back up (290 steps).

I don't mind paying high prices when I feel like I get equivilient back, but that is not the case here. I think you pay a lot for view and being part of a design hotel but not really for the room itself. It is not a bad hotel just overpriced.

Casa Angelina was the last stop on our three week Italian honeymoon. We loved Praiano , its away from the hussle and bussle of the tourists in positano and the village feels unspoilt. There were great restaurants in the village too, all of which we would recommend. The view from our balcony was amazing. The staff on reception were exceptionally friendly and the entire hotel wasvery clean. When we mentioned we were on our honeymoon the hotel filled our bathroom with rose petals and candles, a beautiful touch. Every night we returned to our rooms to find a treat of a chocolate on our pillow and a weather report for the following day. There was free wi fi and laptops for the guests to use and there was a free shuttle bus to positano each day. We loved the gym and jacuzzi too.
We did experience some issues with our stay :
1) Pool Area - For the first few days we weren't able to use the pool area because it was so busy. For quite a large hotel the pool area is tiny with only about 10 sun loungers. Its rediculously small and the pool itself is tiny , when there were 4 people swimming it felt crowded.
2) Beach Area - Is not a beach with sand but a beach of concrete. To get there you have to take a lift through the rock ( not ideal if you are claustrophobic) and walk down a very long and steep pathway , not too bad if you are going down but tiring to get back up to the hotel.
3) Cafe Area and bar - there is a varenda serving food in the daytime and drinks in the evening. the service is unbelievably slow. To get a drink at the bar it took at least 30 minutes for them to serve the drink from taking the order, not ideal if you have a table booked and you need quick service. The food took even longer to arrive in the daytime.
4) Restaurant - Is incredibly expensive, the cost for the buffet breakfast was a massive 25 euros , okay the food was lovely but if you stay there for a week this adds up to a huge amount. We were paying more for breakfast than our dinner in the village with wine ! When we did have dinner in the hotel restaurant we were shocked to be given a 'water' list...in which it was cheaper to buy a bottle of water transported from wales in the UK than a local bottle of San pelligrino. The San Pelligrino was a massive 8 euros a bottle scandalous ?
5) Hotel Room - On booking I chose a 'private balcony 'which I disovered actually meant that we didn't get a view from the balcony when we were sunbathing on the loungers, instead we saw a wall . Its only when we stood up that we could see the sea..... There was also nothing private about it as there was a little to keep your balcony from that next door.
6) Large Groups - As we were on honeymoon we were looking forward to a relaxing stay, unfortunately we ended up staying in the same corridor as a group of 16 very loud guests who were staying there for a birthday celebration. On the first night of our stay the guests stumbled back to the room next to ours at 2 am in the morning waking us up. They all the guests proceeded to sing loudly on the balcony until the early hours. When my husband went to complain the receptionist apologised and said , 'They are drunk' and he would see what he could do . The celebrations continued the next morning in the breakfast area and where ever we went ( even to the beach which we thought we could get away from them ) the entire group was there. So it wasn't very relaxing for us as a couple, it felt at times like we were on a 18-30's holiday .

I so wanted to love this hotel, and it so very nearly got everything absoutely correct - the staff were lovely, the service is slick and everything ran like clockwork. However, the booking system is a real problem - we booked via their online booking system for room with bed and breakfast offer - we had this all in writing. On check in, the hotel decided that the offer actually only applied to the 1st night and initially tried to make us pay the difference, then tried to negotiate a compromise - obviously I refused on the grounds I had booked 7 nights bed and breakfast - and wasn't about to have that changed as the mistake had clearly occurred at their end. The manager agreed to this - but it really wasn't a great start to a long anticipated holiday. On check out this am - another problem - again with the billing - we had originally booked 2 massages but cancelled these on arrival - we had never booked a slot/therapist, but the reception staff again tried to include the cancelled massages on the bill. This was eventually removed, but left somewhat of a bad taste.
I would recommend the hotel - as I say, it is very slick, the staff, particulalry the restaurant staff, bar staff and male concierge are great. The food is good - the breakfast out of offer would set you back E50 a day, and there is a really nice, fresh varied spread. The rooms are immaculate and the maid service impeccable. The boat trip to Capri organised directly with La Gavitella (the restaurant on the beach) was absolutely amazing and well worth the very reasonable E55 per head. Likewise the boat taxi. La strada the restaurant in town was superb, excellent quality and service. Il Brace and Il Pino likewise were good - although the service less chipper!
All in all - good holiday, lovely hotel - a bit soulless - but I would strongly advise checking your reservation and printing out the details - I think the written proof was the only thing which stopped us having to pay for the breakfast we had agreed on offer.

We could tell straight away that this was going to be a good experience. We were collected from the airpport by Sergio who gave us lots of interesting information on the way, and from then it just got better and better. Casa Angelina is a beautiful hotel in a fabulous location; the rooms are minimalist but very comfortable with everything you need, including lovely choccis at bedtime! The whole hotel is spotlessly clean with attention to detail excellent.
All the staff seem so genuinely interested and caring and so very charming and helpful, arranging trips and giving information. The food is great, the restaurant delightful, especially fab breakfast!
Special mention for the lovely charming Guisy, Fabio (great Brandy Alexander!), Antonino and Salvatore and Valeria who saved the day when I messed up our trip to Capri, not to forget Phillipe who got us to the boat in record time! I am only sorry I didn't get more names, you all gave us a fantastic time ,thank you x
