“Fab hotel and very friendly staff!”
Reviewed June 9, 2014 via mobile

We stayed in this hotel for five nights and really enjoyed it.

It is in a great location and the view is amazing. Whilst it is up on the hill, the hotel offer their free shuttle service therefore if you don't like walking - there are options.

The pool area is really nice and relaxing and a little sun trap! The breakfast was delicious and the staff are very very friendly!

We were given various complimentary items including prosecco and limoncello as well as water for our journey when we left-
Very nice touch!

The room was very comfortable and we even had a hot tub on our beautiful balcony.

We ate in the restaurant of the hotel a number of times and it was delicious - again the view is fantastic.

Great hotel and wonderful experience!

Suela and staff cater for everything one could want. Welcome drink, farewell bottles of water, free shuttle to and from Praiano anytime, warm and friendly staff with an attitude of 'anything for the customer'. Lovely pool area, clean and comfortable room with heavenly views, a fun ride on the local bus to Positano and back and the hotel's restaurant was first class. We loved it and will return.

Room Tip: Book a sea view room, it is well worth the money. It is just a heavenly aspect to look at all the ti...

I'm a well traveled guy and can safely say this is the best small hotel of its class I've stayed at anywhere in the world. This is largely because of the excellent management of the property by Suela, its owner.

Location: Praiano is a fantastic base for touring the Amalfi Coast. From here we did excursions throughout the region, even as far away as Pompeii and Mt Vesuvius. Positano is a beautiful and more well known village on this coast, but I don't recommend staying there - it's too touristy. Praiano is a more authentic Italian experience and it's just a 20-min. drive from either Positano or Amalfi. You'll find a lovely secluded beach just outside Praiano and the village itself is quiet with spectacular views.

Public areas of the property: Beautifully maintained. Very clean. The breakfast area looks like the living room of a private home and is lovely. They've got a small sun deck and a little pool. And, of course, a wonderful outdoor restaurant with that incredible view.

Rooms: Very clean. Modern with Old World character. The rooms are quite spacious, bathrooms are great and modern. Splurge for the upgraded rooms with the balcony overlooking the Mediterranean. Well worth it!

Service: Incredible. First and foremost is the service of Suela, who owns and manages the property. She's absolutely amazing. There's nothing she can't do for you. She pretty much single handedly designed our entire itinerary for touring the region. Suela will help you with mastering the public transportation (don't even think of renting a car in this area!!), deciding where to go, when to go and how to go everywhere. The rest of Suela's team is also fantastic and there were no communication problems at all.

Excursions: At Suela's suggestion, we did an excursion to Capri using the hotel's private boat. This, too, was wonderful. Don't miss it. Suela also booked a bus tour for us to Pompeii and Mt Vesuvius - again, great experience not to be missed.

Food: Breakfast was fine, average and typical for hotels of this category. The on-site restaurant is excellent. Don't even think of booking this hotel without a half-board arrangement (breakfast and dinner included). It's wonderful and relaxing to tour during the day and return to enjoy the evening meal at the hotel's restaurant. Food was of excellent quality and the half-board option is remarkably cost-effective. The restaurant has a small menu, but the chef will prepare special food for you if you like - just talk to Suela about it. We had a vegetarian in our group and the chef prepared him special vegetarian options each evening that weren't on the menu. We asked for a specific pasta dish not on the menu and the chef was glad to accommodate us. The restaurant is one of the greatest assets of this hotel.

In short, don't even think of staying anywhere else but the Hotel Margherita while you're on the Amalfi Coast.

Room Tip: Upgrade to the rooms with a sea view. And definitely book this property on a half-board (breakfast A...

Let's start with the location. Where to stay in the Sorrento-Positano-Amalfi peninsula? What do you like? Crowds? Clogged streets full of belching buses? A million t-shirt shops on the Street of Stuff? A giant cruise ship disgorging fat ill-attired tourists snapping up paper straw hats, funny shirts and souvenir tiles? Or do you long for the tranquil and lovely setting of an earlier era, before the jet plane and mega-ships brought your tiresome neighbors to a setting formerly the haunt of stylish aristos and well-heelded artistes? Seek no further, Praiano is about as close as you're going to get without buying a private island.

Situated midway between Positano and Amalfi, this quiet, charming little township has as much as you need and no more: a beautiful cove, a couple of beaches, a terraced mountainside with very cool villas and quaint hotels rising up from the rocky coastline drenched in plenty of sun and cool mountain air. What more can you want? How many t-shirts or colored souvenir tiles can you buy anyway? We were grateful to have found this ideal getaway and congratulated ourselves every time we drove or rode into Positano or Amalfi to "look around" and came back to our wonderful getaway.

The Hotel Margherita sits high above the town on a quiet road, with plenty of parking for your rent-a-car and a view to die for. All rooms, as far as I could tell, face the sea and boy, the views are great. The staff and management (the hotel remains in the the family that built the property in the 1960s) are super-nice, cordial, unfailingly helpful and they know all there is to know about the Amalfi Coast and how to get the best out of your stay.

Our room was reasonably spacious, had superb unobstructed ocean view, a decent-size balcony one could sit on to enjoy the cool breezes and was equipped with a real King Size bed of more than adequate comfort. There was working hot water in the bath and good internet throughout the hotel. The sheets were clean and changed every day.

There's a small, but plenty adequate swimming pool overlooking the sea and a spacious terrace for lying around and soaking up some sun. Some reviewers commented that the pool was not a "real" pool or not well maintained. I cannot guess at what they are talking about, it's a normal concrete/plastered/tiled swimming pool and has a very nice "spa" built into it. It was clean and fully operational during our visit. We used it and enjoyed it.

But the story gets better. More or less by accident our room came with "half board" meaning lunch or dinner every day. I didn't even remember that we had purchased this and was surprised when we arrived and they told me. We figured, "Well, we better try it once anyway" and ate "at home" our first night. We never missed a meal thereafter. The restaurant occupies a splendid rooftop terrace with striking panoramic views of the sea and mountains. The food is way-above-average and "half-board" means, "Order whatever and as much as you might wish from our a la carte menu." We dined like kings on the splendid cuisine, which would have been hard to improve upon, for hours into the night, then wandered back to our room astonished at the opulence of the whole affair. Do not miss out on this option, it's worth every penny! There's a cooking school too I am told but we did not take advantage if it. And do not under any circumstances fail to try the home made gelato, it will raise the bar for your gelato shopping thereafter.

Anyway, we loved the location, the hotel, the wonderful people who hosted us and the superb dining. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Room Tip: I don't see how you could go wrong.

We stayed for a week at this great little hotel. We went with 2 other couples, one of whom has stayed there several times before. The staff was very accommodating and the food and wine were wonderful. It was our base of operations for a full week of Amalfi coast experiences, before we left to go to Ischia for another week. Being small and intimate, they treated us like family. The views are magnificent and a calm relaxing place to be in September. It was a wonderful experience and one we hope to repeat in the near future.

We stayed at Hotel Margherita in the middle of May.  Out of all the various hotels/villas that we stayed at while in Italy (a total of 5), this was our favorite.  The views from our room out to the Amalfi coast were just spectacular.  Our room was located on the 2nd floor and it was a corner room.  The room number was 24.  The room was large and clean.  The bathroom was very big with a Jacuzzi bathtub and a very nice large shower.  The main room where the bed is located, the ceilings are painted blue with white clouds painted on it, but they also put LED lights in the ceiling so it was like having a night sky in your bedroom.  That was pretty nice.  We had WI-FI in the room and never had any issues with it.  Not sure why this hotel is rated a 3 star.  In our eyes, it was a 4 star.  Their is also ample parking in a small parking across from the hotel and if there is no spots open, they will park your car in another location. The owners, Suela and Andrea were fantastic hosts.  They were there for breakfast and then again for dinner.  They both were very helpful with us getting around the Amalfi coast.  Out of the towns we visited on the Amalfi coast, Praiano was our favorite.  The reason for this comment is that it still has the feel of a small Italian town that is perched on the hill side.  Positano and Amalfi are overridden with tourists and is just way too busy and congested for us.  Ravello is nice and has great views, but you really are away from the main Amalfi road.  So, if you are planning on going to the various towns on the Amalfi coast, Ravello would just add more time to your trip.  Praiano was perfect since it is not that far away from Positano (maybe 20 minutes – on a good day) and Amalfi which was also maybe 20 minutes away (on a good day).  We actually drove the Amalfi coast 4 times with our rental car.  You do need to have nerves of steel and you are amazed at how those bus drivers get their buses to fit on that darn narrow road.  But back to the hotel, we were very impressed with it and would recommend anyone to stay at the location.  The hotel itself is located up a narrow one way street that is on a hill.  The hotel will drive you down to the town center itself, if needed, or you can walk.  I walked it one day and it really did not take long.  (Maybe 10 minutes).  But, the walk will be up the hill and then down the hill till you get to the center of town.  And you really are almost at the center of town.  Suela made dinner reservations for us on our first night at a restaurant that picks you up.  That restaurant was Tramonte 'D 'Oro.  The food was great and the views were fantastic.  Because we had reservations, we had a table that was on the patio overlooking the Amalfi coast.  Could not get any better than that.  The restaurant is actually located in the Hotel 'D 'Oro. The 2nd dinner was at Hotel Margherita and their restaurant, Ristorante M'ama! and it was also a great meal.  We could have eaten out on the terrace where the views to the Amalfi coast were great, but we decided to eat inside.  It was a little chilly and we were tried from our day trip.  Again, this was our favorite Hotel that we stayed at while in Italy and would have loved to have stayed longer than 2 nights.

Room Tip: Select a room with a balcony and with a view out over the Amalfi Coast.

Definately it was a great choice! Staff is super kind and helpful and the place itself is very nice (especially the tiles in the rooms). It's also a great base from which You can visit other places of interest on Amalfi Coast. We were given some valuable tips concerning exploring Amalfi Coast which ocurred to be very helpful when visiting Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. There's a private parking right in front of the hotel which is very convenient if You are travelling by car and quite rare on Amalfi Coast. Positano is just 15 minutes away and there's a bus stop right in front of the hotel.
If we are back on Amalfi Coast, we'll definately choose Hotel Margherita again =)
