Mixed feelings about the Grand Hotel Tritone...

On the one hand, the cliff-side setting is simply exquisite. We opted for a junior suite, and we were blown away by the sea view from our large balcony. Some more pluses:

* Friendly, helpful service.
* Good food (not great). Lovely breakfast buffet.
* Relatively reasonable price for the area.
* Location (about 10 minutes by taxi to Positano) - somewhat inconvenient if you're relying on buses, great if you can catch a boat at the hotel's dock, and pretty convenient if you're daring enough to make the treacherous walk into the town of Praiano (walking will take about 25 minutes). As for us, we found it wasn't a big deal to walk, and we enjoyed some really yummy restaurants in Praiano.

On the other hand, this hotel is OLD SCHOOL. The public areas are old, but still retain some bit of elegance. Our suite, however, was just plain old. The bed was hard, the pillows not the least bit fluffy, and the shower pretty dingy. I'm pretty sure all the maids smoke (as does EVERYONE in Italy); therefore, all our bed linens - even "clean" ones - smelled like an ashtray.

But, the views...! So, it's a tradeoff, I guess.

Clearly, this hotel is not for everyone. In addition to my description, please note that it would not be a great choice for families traveling with small children, or elderly people, or anyone who can't manage multiple flights of stairs. (This could be said about the entire Amalfi Coast, BTW.)

Nor should you expect white-sand beaches on the Amalfi Coast. The "beaches" are all ROCKS! Personally, I don't care. I was there to enjoy the culture and the cuisine, and that I did.

Reviews I read prior to our stay had warned me about all this, but we booked anyway, arrived with low expectations, and were pleasantly surprised by all the nice features this hotel has to offer. Recommend you do the same, if this hotel fits your budget. :)

Room Tip: Ask for a room close to the lobby. You may get free WiFi! (We did.) Also, you'll be closer to th...

The Grand Hotel Tritone is Grand simply because of its great location! However the rooms definitely need to be refurbished: the couch in our room must have been pink at some point in time... its corners were damaged and it was full of stains... the bed was not uncomfortable but was certainly not the best bed and the black metallic base of the bed was quite ugly.
This being said we really liked the place, the service was very good, the breakfast was very good, the staff was very helpful and again, simply the location of the hotel and its beach are worth staying there.
I would simply say that the rate we paid was not deserved because of the room furniture, the hotel could/should definitely make an effort and not rely on its reputation and location...

This hotel was gorgeous. The swimming pools (one near the top and one closer to the ocean) were very nice. There was not any sand to the beach-mostly rocks and then a little dock to climb down the ladder into the ocean-with beautiul views (the water was very clear as well). With it being so hot we really really appreciated the swimming here-it was not crowded either. The breakfast was nice and had a gorgeous view. There were flowers everywhere and the view was just beautiful. There is an elevator that leads down to the "beach"/pool or there are cute little windy steps you can take..anyway-its beautiful. Our room was very roomy-like more room than necessary roomy. We had a nice roomy balcony off our room with great views-there were other balconies next to ours that you could peep over onto if you wanted-so only semi private. Was great to have a.c. in the room-it was very hot outside! The a.c. was noisy when sitting out on the balcony-but easy solution-turn it off when sitting out there. The room was clean but.....It smelt like cigarettes pretty bad- We didn't ask to change rooms or anything- so i don't know if they offer non smoking rooms (I would think). The bed was very comfy. We just stayed at the hotel while we were here-didn't really wander into town. The front desk staff was not overly friendly-but they were not necessarily rude. The gentleman outside the main entrance was helpful in telling us where to stand to wave down the next bus to take us back into sorrento. I don't know for sure if I would stay at this hotel again in the future just because it is pricier than I would normally pay-but it really was a beautiful hotel.

Room Tip: See if they have non smoking rooms if you don't want your room to smell like cigarette. I think...

This was our last hotel on a ten day trip that included Capri and Sorrento. The view is amazing! The beach (Cement) was exemplary. Lots of Sun beds, Salt water pool, and a place to jump in the ocean and climb back out. We never ate in the restaurant but I heard from others while we were there that is was outstanding. We did have three lunches down at the beach, and were treated like royalty. The pool and restaurant and bar staff were outstanding, and incredibly friendly.
Despite what was written in other reviews, there is indeed luggage service, and it was great. We rented a car while we were in Sorrento, and the hotel has great valet parking.
The room was comfortable enough(bed was a little hard but all of them were this trip). The view from our balcony was amazing. The room was clean, and cleaned every day. The entire place was spectacular, and we will stay here again for sure.

Room Tip: Get an ocean view room! The view from the balcony is not be missed. We ate several meals on our balc...
