Firstly let me say that after having a drink at a near by beach bar, I found that an Italian guy sitting in an open beach hut charging either 12.5 or 15 euros per person to go on the beach quite ridiculous, the beach itself is a bit pebbly and all the beds and parasols are lined up regimentally, this area of Italy is not reknown for golden sands, but I've seen better that are public beaches, people should stop paying these stupid prices, it's becoming "Rip Off Italy"

Beach is rocky but once you get into the water it is awesome I Stayed in the water for over a 45 min to a hour enjoyed every minute of it got back out of the water with no problem once I had my water shoes and knew what was going on. everything worked out good definitely go back but there's a better beach off to the left side of Positano

Look...its the center of town. There is the most energy there.
But the people that work the chair service are the rudest in Positano. Everyone else at least pretend to like the tourist (which is how they feed themselves to be 100% clear)....not these guys.

Get there early to get a chair in the front for 12.50 EURO for the day. Beach is rocky, so I'd suggest also bringing water shoes if you want to swim. Close to restaurants, restrooms and a shower (water is super salty). Great views of the town!

The overall vista of the Spiaggia Grande at Positano is quite spectacular. However, being on the actual "beach" is not! I disliked the pebbles intensely and found it really difficult to even approach the water. When finally in the water it is refreshing cool and clear (despite the presence of several hundred boats leaving deposits). Again, getting out of the sea was a challenge. My daughter solved the problem by wearing her thongs so she could walk with comfort over the stones in the shallows.
I appreciate the Italian way of visiting a beach and having to pay EUR12.50 for a chair and umbrella for the day (Towels are an extra EUR2.50 as is a shower!). However, I think because I am Australian and have access to some of the most wonderful beaches in the world I am spoilt and perhaps biased as access to our beaches are also free, as nature intended.
We hired a boat one morning and I noticed a little way up from Spiaggia Grande there was a hotel set up a little way into the cliff with steps leading down to some deck chairs scattered on the rocks at the foot of the hotel. There was access to the water and a ladder providing an easy exit back onto the rocks. A much better way to enjoy the azzure waters of the Mediterranean!
