Hotel La Bougainville
Ranked #22 of 38 Hotels in Positano
Certificate of Excellence

The best location in Positano, a few steps from the main square. A short way downstairs is the main beach, and while on the path to the beach, you see many restaurants, some of the best choices in town. Staff is incredibly helpful and rooms are pretty clean. Great value for the price, once it's way cheaper than other Trip Advisor best rated hotels. Breakfast is average, but similar to many other we had while in Italy. Definitely worth the money.

This was the first stop on a 10 day trip in Italy. We booked two rooms for four nights from Aug 2-6 – one for my two adult daughters, the other for me and my wife.

Positano is built up in to the hills, but La Bougainville is on the pedestrian level. From the hotel, it is only about a 7 minute walk to the beach down a sidewalk that passes many shops and restaurants. We chose this location because we wanted to minimize the number of steps to climb. If you decide to stay further up in the hills, there is a bus service that runs from the main street that La Bougainville is on. However, we noticed that these buses were very crowded (standing room only many times).

We booked two of the sea view rooms with balconies and very happy that we did. As other posters have said, the non sea view rooms are very small. We would not have been as happy with them.

The staff is very friendly and helpful. They made dinner reservations for us almost every night. The breakfast is a basic continental breakfast – breads, cheese, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, tomatoes, etc. Nothing fancy, but adequate. We ate at the round table in the front part of the breakfast room every morning – it was very nice.

There are a couple of negatives about our stay. Our daughters had room 26. They complained immediately that the drain in their shower would not drain very well, causing the shower basin to overflow. The 2nd night, there were ants coming up through the shower drain. The staff cleaned the shower when we reported the ants, but they came right back the next day. We were told that there really wasn’t anything they could do about the ant issue, which I found very hard to believe. I don’t know what has been done, but it seems to me that a good exterminator could take care of the problem. Needless to say, my daughters did not want to stay in the room, so we switched rooms with them.

I would like to give the hotel a higher rating based on our stay in room 34. However, if you happen to get room 26, you may have a different opinion. The hotel is in a great location. If you stay there, avoid room 26 and ask for a sea view room…and enjoy your stay - Positano is a great place!

Room Tip: Avoid room 26. Ask that they make sure the room you do get does not have ants!

My family of four stayed at La Bougainville for several days in the beginning of August, 2012. We found the rooms to be nice - clean and comfortable, but no frills, the location was great, and the staff very friendly. The staff made several dinner arrangements for us, and we thouroughly enjoyed all of them. You don't have to worry about restaurants being within walking distance, because many of the lovely hillside restaurants provide free shuttle service. We were there at peak season, and the bus stop, which was right across the street, was always very crowded - standing room only. We were happy that we were able to avoid that. We also appreciated the staff's suggestions for the beach - they know the area well and want their guests to enjoy themselves. The breakfast was nice but not a lot of variety - mainly breads, hard boiled eggs, yogurt, and some fresh fruit. The gentleman serving the breakfast was extremely nice and helpful. He really made us feel welcome. My husband and I stayed in Room 34 and thought it was lovely. We had a balcony which looked out over the street and towards the sea. The view was very nice. In the evenings, we could visit the terraced bar across the street and enjoy a drink before the shuttle came to pick us up for dinner. Our two daughters had Room 26. Their balcony view was the same except they had ants in their shower. At least 100 of them! When we checked in, the room looked fine, but after the first night, the ants took over their shower stall. We spoke to the very nice lady at the desk about it, but she said there was nothing that could be done because of the heat. A staff member went into the room and got rid of the ants for us, but by the next evening, they were back. Their shower also had a drainage problem - the water drained so slowly that it caused an overflow onto the bathroom floor. It was a shame that our room was so nice and their room was not. I would highly recommend this hotel except for the ant problem. If you do go, ask for a room facing the sea but do not request Room 26! You will love the location and the staff, and you won't have any ants to worry about!

Room Tip: Avoid Room 26 because of the ants! Try to get a room with a balcony facing the sea - they are larger...

We loved this hotel. Everyone was pleasant; they had very clean rooms and nice air conditioning. The bathroom was the largest I've seen in Europe! We were budget travelers and the price was fair. Although the walk to the hotel from the boat was tough...we'll hire a porter next time at the dock to help us with our bags up the steep hill. The hotel was close to lots of good restaurants and nice shops. Also very close to the bus stop.

Just got back from a wonderful 10 day vacation in Positano where I stayed at
the Hotel La Bougainville! I researched online many hotels to choose from in
Positano...what really engaged me... was the hotels owner, Marella and her
staff's immediate and prompt responses to my email questions. They
arranged everything for me from, a very professional driver/Mercedes car
transport from Naples to their hotel, a chilled bottle of wine in my room
awaiting for me, tickets to a Ravello concert, arranging a car to pick us up to
go to the local ceramics factory where we bought a beautiful custom made
bistro table with a picture of Positano on it! All the staff is EXTREMELY hard
working and helpful. It was very nice to have a nice breakfast provided every
morning. This really saved me a lot of money. Every morning it was so
sweet that the gentlemen making our breakfast learned that we liked
American coffee...and brought it to us as soon as we sat down...without even having to ask!

Room Tip: If going to Positano make sure you get an ocean view Terrace! I have traveled all over the world, an...

A good location at the top end of the pedestrian strip to the beach, just metres away from the Internal bus and an easy walk to the main road for buses to Amalfi/Sorrento.
Staff were friendly and helpful and as the hotel is only small, it was very quiet.
Breakfast was nice, usual variety of continental offerings and in a nice, airy room with freshy made coffee.

Room Tip: It was worth the extra to have a sea view room!
