We stayed for 3 nights at the Montemare and had few complaints. We had the cheaper room and still had a cracking view. The interior of the hotel is beautiful and mediterranean with cool white walls and marble stairs. The staff were helpful and were quick to respond to my emails and provided us with what we needed during our stay. A previous reviewer commented on the older woman who looks after the breakfast room. It's worth noting that I found her friendly and looked forward to seeing her monitoring the breakfast buffet each morning. My only real gripe was the WIFI internet charge. Out of the 6 hotels we stayed at in Italy 4 had free WIFI. I find it a bit cheeky to set up a user pays system for this service. Most hotels are offering it free as the cost is minimal and they understand this could be the decider for a guest to choose their hotel over another (it can be for me). Hopefully this service will become standard along with the T.V, airconditioner and safe.

We stayed here for 3 nights in July 2010. My only complaint was the staff. After experiencing such warmth in Rome, we walked into the Montemare and were checked in, but not welcomed or greeted in any way. The coolness of the staff was present throughout our stay, and was the only down-side to the magic of Positano.

The hotel feels cool and Mediterranean, with white walls and beautiful blue tiles. The iron balcony is small, but charming. The breakfast room is a lovely way to start the day, if not fantastic fare. The young man was attentive and hard working and, like the previous review mentioned, I found the presence of the older senora to be grumpy and unfriendly.

Primarily due to the unfriendly staff, we avoided the hotel restaurant, which by the other reviews here, was fortunate. Just down the hill, we had a wonderful meal at the terrace-side restaurant. We also enjoyed Lo Guarrancino, on the path to the small beach, for pizza, amazing view and white wine direct from the barrel.

If I return to Positano, I would look for other hotels, due to the service. However, if I had to sacrifice the view, I would return to the Montemare.

We stayed in Hotel Montemare for four nights during the first week of June. Our room was very clean with a kind of quiet, elegant touch: it had a nice seating area, a very comfortable bed, and a fine bathroom with a marble vanity counter and sink. Be aware: the showers in Italy are extremely small, and this shower was no exception. There was also a miniature, stocked refrigerator in the room, which is nice to have when the weather is warm. The service at the hotel was, for the most part, very warm and welcoming. Of course, the best feature of the room was the view: although the balcony was small, the view from it and the bedroom was perfectly stunning. Few hotels in Positano can offer such views. About the restaurants and breakfast: breakfast is served on the terrace, so that you get to wake up to the lovely view, and the food is fine, especially if you like sweets; however, the matriarch of the hotel sits grimly at a table and yells at the young server every day. I suggest that she be more discreet so that her grumpiness does not infect everyone. The restaurant serves very good pizza, but they charge a "service charge" for eating there--we were not pleased, as we were hotel guests. The seafood soup was inedibly salty. I suggest eating at other restaurants in town. Here is another tip: make the trip to Capri, buy some panini and wine, and go up Anacapri on the lift for the picnic of your life. It's gorgeous.

This hotel has a stunning location looking down on the town and the bay, and they have a small parking area adjacent to the entrance, a rarity in Positano. Our room had a tiny sliver of a balcony but enough room for two cafe chairs on which to sit and sip wine and admire the view. The room was clean and comfortable and very spacious, but the purple tiled floor was a little startling. Montemare has several large terraces, and obviously attracts outside diners to enjoy its great views, but the dinner was very disappointing - a starter of melon and prosciutto was very tasty, but our pasta and seafood courses were rather dry and poorly seasoned, and the dessert of tiramisu came in a plastic pot which had obviously just had the lid peeled off. Stay here, but eat elsewhere.

Together with a group of 4 couples we each received helpful service over the phone when booking, plus every help with all our questions during our one week stay.
The location of Hotel Montemare is a dream ... perfect views from the rooms, magnificient views from the breakfastroom, diningroom and a Patio that other hotels would kill for! It's position is a leisurely long-ish stroll uphill past the shops and evenings if you don't want to stay in at the excellent hotel pizzaria/restaurant, then there is plenty of choice a short walk from the hotel. I will recommend this to everyone who wants to visit Positano. A dollar saved on accommodation somewhere else is a shame - If you want to have a great stay on the Amalfi coast, then do it right.

Not too far out of the centre but far enough, you do need to be pretty fit & agile to handle Positano, lots of steps! This hotel is family run & you deal with the same people all the time you're here. All have adequate/good English. The food in the terrace bar is lovely, and the bedrooms are cleaned regularly. Our room was clean and comfortable and the big bathroom was a nice change. The immediate view from the balcony wasn't great but beyond that was gorgeous. Breakfast was nice also. Positano is beautiful but expensive.

The view was stunning, but being in Positano that's understandable. Moreover the room was big and very comfortable, the balcony sizeable, the bathroom large and clean. The location is perfect, not right in the centre of Positano - which can be a bit too hectic - but not too far up the town either, so it's a very reasonable walk from the beach. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, always available to answer questions and to help with small details. The atmosphere is obviously that of a friendly family-run hotel, and that cosiness is very much part of what makes the Montemare so special. We are definitely hoping to return, and wouldn't think of staying anywhere else.
