We arrived in Positano by ferry and immediately were faced with the challenge of getting to the Montemare. Although you can see it from the sea front, I didn't appreciate how high the hotel was in this extremely steep town. Mistakenly, I thought we could walk to the hotel up a staircase that started behind the tourist information office. Ordinarily, this would be possible but we had two heavy suitcases and the sun was baking.
We arrived at the hotel just about ready to drop. It was just before 2pm an fortunately our room was available straight away.
The walk through the corridors was a little concerning as there appeared to be a damp problem with paint coming off the walls in parts. However, upon arriving in our room, we were pleasantly surprised. It wasn't the most modern, didn't have a balcony you could sit out on and the wardrobe top hadn't seen a duster in a while but that aside, was well laid out and had everything we wanted.
That evening, we ate in the restaurant Capitano attached to the hotel. It was Friday night and I think we were fortunate to get a table without making an advance reservation. We were so pleased they could accommodate us, the food, drink, service, views and atmosphere were absolutely amazing. It might not be the cheapest meal you'll have in Positano but was certainly worth every penny and definitely a recommendation if some romance is required during your stay!
The following morning, breakfast was served in a room with outside terraced seating. We were both very impressed with the selection of food. Hot and cold options were available, it was well laid out, the staff were friendly and was a very enjoyable part of our stay.
We had noticed our shower tray wasn't draining and the cubicle leaked water across the floor. This was reported to reception in ear shot of the owner but I didn't feel they took my concerns terribly seriously. In fairness, somebody did improve the drainage but the shower continued to leak water across the floor during our stay.
There are lots of bars, restaurants and shops within an easy walk of this hotel but if you can't face all the steps, it is a 15 minute or so walk into the main part of town. I would readily stay here again but feel the price is top end for a hotel that lacks a pool.
