Il San Pietro di Positano
Ranked #1 of 38 Hotels in Positano
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 13, 2010

The San Pietro hotel in Positano is a oasis with views of the Amalfi Coast that are truly incredible. The romantic hotel and five star level service was the perfect spot for three nights to end our stay in Italy. The staff went above and beyond to make our stay memorable and everyone smiled to show genuine care for our visit. The food was 5 star and evening dining experience looking over the coast is outstanding. With all the flowers abundant everywhere on property, lemon trees and orchids you felt like your in paradise. one of the top hotels in the world in our opinion. We are looking forward to returning. The shuttle into Positano is nice since the hotel is not in the town of Positano but on the outskirts.. definately a plus as it is quiet and without all the tourist noise and congestion.

Having stayed in many very high quality five star hotels around the world I could not help but feel let down by the quality of the accommodation, service and the restaurant at the Il San Pietro. Our room was frankly basic and quite small with ill matched furniture. The balcony was large enough for two sunbeds and a small table so it was possible to sunbathe there but only just. The bathroom contained only minimal toiletries and although there was a jacuzzi bath, the shower was a handheld thing that attached to the wall with very little water pressure and a plastic shower curtain. Although we always make a special effort to be charming to all staff wherever we stay, the attitude we received from staff at the San Pietro was really no more than resentfully polite, as though we were simply a nuisance to them by being there. We ate in the one star Michelin restaurant there twice but this also fell very short of any of the many Michelin starred restaurants we have eaten in the past (one or three star) in whatever country. The menu was quite small and the food, although very expensive, was barely average and lacked much flavour of any kind. On the second night we ate there, we were left for so long before being asked if we wanted desert that we simply walked out. A WORD OF WARNING to all: the buffet breakfast consists of salamis, cereal, ham, bread, boiled eggs and some fruit. If you want anything hot, it costs extra. My husband was charged 8 euros for some scrambled egg! Also, avoid the mini bar - my gin and tonic cost me 18 euros! Sadly, this is the only 5 star hotel I have stayed in where I have genuinely thought it was really not worth the money. Unfortunately, I can't help feeling that they are living off some past reputation and need to come up to speed. If you particularly want to stay at the San Pietro, my advice would be to make use of the complimentary mini bus and eat in the town where the food is better and cheaper and at least there is a lively atmosphere.

When you stay at the Il San Pietro, you are staying there for the views. There are NONE comparable. It's one of those special places that you are lucky enough to stay at in your life. The views are amazing, and arriving at the hotel makes you feel unbelievable. So, is it worth the money....yes.

The rooms are not the best. Granted. It's an old hotel carved out of a mountain. But, the room was more than adequate and made me feel comfortable. The bathroom was again, adequate, but the view was amazing. We had a full size window that you could look out of from the bathub. Breathtaking.

The service was good, but I'm 32 and at times I felt like the youngest person there....and maybe we were seen as such. I didn't care though.

If you stay here, please take a night to eat at the restaurant. It was my favorite part. Not terribly expensive, but again, the views are unmatch. Try to pay the maitre d $20 to get a table on the balcony next to the railing. You won't ever forget that view.

Also, go to the pool. It's equally breathtaking. An unmatched experience. The beach are wasn't my favorite though.

While expensive, the Il San Pietro was worth it. Hopefully I'll go back someday.

We have visited Italy nearly every year for the past 15 years, and we have just stayed in our all time favorite hotel, The San Pietro. Others have told of the incredible views of sea and mountains, of Positano and Maiori. It's close to sensory overload. But what makes this such a special place is the consistency of service. During our stay everybody was on their "A" game. It started with the guy who greets you upon arrival and magically keeps your car handy at a moment's notice, a real trick on the Amalfi Coast. It continued at the front desk with a speedy, yet warm and friendly check in. Dining room service, ditto, Sommelier, you bet. Not once was there a lapse.
Common areas are beauifully furnished indoors and meticulouly maintained outdoors. The room, a junior suite was exquite and roomy, with a comfy bed, large terrace overlooking the sea and a great bathroom. The food is clearly deserving of the Michelin recognition. This all amounted to the perfect stay. Its what every hotel promises yet it seems we only experience it every now and then.
Since we frequently go to Italy, and since we love the Amalfi Coast, its pretty clear that there is no other choice for us in the future. You know, a splurge doesn't seem that expensive when your high expectations are met.

We stayed in June, 2009. The setting is stunning. The staff speak English well and they act as if they really care about your satisfaction. They have the best views on the coast. They have a very private and refreshing roof-top pool and they bring you refreshments readily
Make sure you do not get a room below the lobby. They smell like locker rooms. They are reluctant to change your room easily. Do not buy any merchandise from the hotel if you want it shipped. They use an disreputable company who charges indecently and does not insure the shipment. We never received some beautiful Murano juice glasses we purchased from the hotel, nor some warm weather clothes we sent home early. Neither the hotel nor the shipper made it right, despite numerous assurances they would. (Lost about 1500 euros).
If you go for a swim at their beach, bring your own sunscreen. It is for sale at their bar for 150 euros otherwise. Check your reciepts carefully prior to checking out. There may be (inadvertant) charges you did not make.
We enjoyed the views, but will not return.

Il San Pietro di Positano really satisfies all guests’ expectations, from the moment you arrive. A large de-luxe hall with wide windows let the natural light enter inside and melt with the interiors creating a unique atmosphere. You can find the same at the restaurant: wherever you are seated you can enjoy a spectacular view over the coast. The menu and the wine list are both worth a visit (we felt in love with the berries and meringue dessert). The service is attentive and careful. Rooms have all you may need including your private terrace overlooking the sea where breakfast can be served without a supplement. That experience is a must-to-have of your trip. Don’t miss the spa, a unique relaxing place in an impressive setting, just few steps from the main lobby. Il San Pietro will conquer you as it did with us and, like us, you will book it again before leaving.

We spent two nights here at the beginning of our honeymoon. As expected (and as priced), this hotel was world-class: the setting on the cliff's of Positano a few kilometers outside of the main town, is breathtaking. The facilities are well maintained. The staff attentive. The food great. The rooms very nice. It met our high expectations. If you are in the mood to spend $750-1000 per night for a world class experience, this hotel should be on your list. FYI, the sister hotel to this, le Sirenuse, seemed equally nice, and although we didnt stay there, we felt staying a few kilometers outside of town (vs in town where le Sirenuse is located) was better.
