“Pure Heaven!”
Reviewed April 3, 2011

My husband and I are currently staying at Il San Pietro as part of our honeymoon and we couldn't be any happier! It is the most beautiful place we have ever seen. The attention to detail is mind-bogglng. They have just opened for the season, and there is not one inch of property that has not been polished, cleaned, rejuvenated or planted to get ready for the year.
Let's start with the room. We are in a standard with sea view. The amenities are more than adequate, the bed is comfortable, the private terrace is a most welcome spot for breakfast alfresco each morning and napping in the afternoon, and it is cleaned and refreshed for us twice each day. The room appointments are elegant without feeling stuffy.
The staff has been incredibly welcoming and ready to attend to any request we make. A drive into town, tennis rackets and balls for use on the court, maps and guide books, laundry, etc.,; f you ask for it, they will accomodate. I don't understand any of the other reviewers who thought the service was "snooty" ....
The restaurant IS pricey, but the food was undeniably excellent. We are glad we ate there our first night, and now are venturing into Positano for other meals.
The grounds are simply breathtaking. The abundant lemon trees release a lovely, fresh aroma into the air. Every spare inch of dirt has either been planted with new, flowering annuals, or roses, shrubs and other plants ready to burst into color. We can only imagine what it will look like in a few weeks!!
Honestly, even if you can only stay for one night, you owe it to yourself to experience this little slice of heaven on earth.

Tough to write this review because there were so many highs, and so many lows. Let's start w/ the positives. This place is spectacular. From the moment you exit the elevator, it's just simply breathtaking. Situated high upon a cliff, the views from everywhere (including the bathroom!) are jaw dropping. It might be the lone reason that I would return. The waitstaff and bartenders are all very good and seem to really care about your needs. The food is quite good, although very expensive at their main dining room. The beach area is also quite beautiful. It's an elevator ride to the bottom of the cliff (well, you can take the "stairs" but it's quite a long way down...). Lot's of beach chairs and a bar. Small, rocky beach. Great lunch restaurant at the beach.

Then there's the other side of the coin. The rooms are mediocre at best. While the views are amazing, the rooms themselves are not much above a Holiday Inn. But you're paying a whole lot more than a Holiday Inn. Then there's the front desk staff. We checked in around 3pm our first day, and around 6pm found a number of ants roaming the tile floor in the room. Went to the front desk, and the first thing out of her mouth was "You must have brought in food to the room". We hadn't. And we'd only been there 3 hours anyway. More ants the next day. They have a problem and don't want to take responsibility for it. And to accuse the guest of being the cause of the problem (especially at $1000/nt) is just plain wrong. Oh yeah, we weren't the only room having ant problems...

Loved the location, loved the views, food was good but pricey. Waitstaff wonderful. Lousy rooms for the money. Front desk w/ a really poor customer service attitude.

Would I go back? I don't really know at this point how to answer that question. If the rooms were completely renovated the answer would be a resounding yes.

I was forced to mark a Yes or No to "would you recommend this hotel to a friend". The real answer is "maybe".

My wife and I decided to stay here for a portion of our honeymoon. This hotel was definately a splurge for us, but we figured it was our honeymoon, so why not ?!? Let me tell you, this place did not disappoint. We went in the first week in October, so the place was definately on the emptier side, but we didnt mind. The only snafu we came across was that the room we stayed the first night was directly under the stairwell that led down to the floor we were on from the lobby. We had just come from a very quiet suite in Capri and at the price we were paying did not expect to be woken up by people with suitcases going up and down the stair all morning. I simply stated that fact to the front desk immediately that morning and the very kind lady not only offered to move us immediately, but gave us the choice of two different rooms! After seeing our first room and the two others I will note that each room is beautiful in its own way and offers something diffferent. (obviously some are quite larger then others)
The only thing that was funny, was that when we were checking in they said they gave us an excellent upgrade since we were honeymooners. These other two rooms were CLEARLY much larger then the one we were originally in, but I guesss you cant expect everything. The champage and fruit complementary upon arrival was very nice in itself.

Some other things to note are how excellent the breakfasts are. They offer the same choice each day, but you can try to mix it up on your own. We would eat on our patio overlooking the ocean every day. Defiantly take advantge of the complementary boat tour. it is lovely. You even get some time to swim around. We would love to order a cocktail before we went out each night. The lobby was lovely and the drinks came with olives, nuts and veggies. It was like an appitizer in itself. the most delicious olives i ever had!
The walk from the beach up the stone steps to lobby is something one cannot miss. THe flowers, the farms, the views.. it's like nothing you ever saw before. The staff was very firendly and extremely helpful. The shuttle service was very reliable. We never waitied more then 5 minutes or so. Found the restaurent overpriced, so we never ate there. The pool and beach area (a rock platform) were magical. so picturesque. Did go to the buffet one morning just to take in a new view. I can't say anything too bad about this place. We were in a funk the entire day we left, on our way to Rome. We promised we'd be back one day!

A hotel with the PERFECT location marred by a staff that it stuffy, unhelpful and snooty. Breakfast is perfection; dinner in their much touted restaurant is stiff and over-priced. There is a restuarant that is a 10 minute walk from the hotel that is authentic, delicious, and a much better bargain. Positano, itself, is pricey and touristic. If you're going to the Amalfi coast, stay out of the well-known towns; aim for the little villages in the smaller coves where the food is fresh and fabulous, prices more reasonable, and the welcome is genuine.

We just returned to NYC from a 4 night stay at the Hotel San Pietro. Words cannot express how impressed and amazed we were by the staff, service, setting, food and beauty of this hotel. Everyone went above and beyond to ensure that our visit would be magnificent. The ambiance, views and rooms are spectacular. The concierge are very helpful in planning/recommending day trips to all the relevant sights and cities that provided for lasting memories.

This experience is one we'll never forget. Thank you so much, HSP, for your class and for making our visit to Italy and the Amalfi Coast so enjoyable and memorable. We hope to visit again soon.
