“Beautiful hotel in perfect location”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

Stayed two nights here with a package walking/hiking tour group. A gorgeous hotel in a perfect location in Positano. A short walk (if steep downhill) to the beach area, close to shops and restaurants (and ATMs). Historic (was once owned by Napoleon's brother-in-law), killer views from the rooms, lovely courtyard and garden, including the pool area. Great breakfast - TWO chocolate cakes on the buffet. Great service. Had lunch one day at the restaurant in the garden - very nice. Had final night banquet in a private room - was fine but nothing special. Comfortable rooms, quiet, just lots of stairs depending on where your room is.

Room Tip: I think all the rooms have great views since hotel is built into cliffside, like many Positano build...

We could have not asked for a better place in positano, we loved it the minute we walked in to the Hotel. The rooms a very nice, but the best is everything else. The restaurant, the service, the staff, the location, all perfect.
Is the best Hotel in Positano, great for couples.

After arriving on the Amalfi Coast and driving our rental car down, down, down to Positano, I was getting a bit anxious about what we'd find. The narrow roads were full of people walking in the middle of the streets, scooters zipping by, and small hotels and inns that I knew I didn't want to stay in. When we reached the end of the road we easily found the parking lot, left the car with the valet who said he'd have our bags brought to us, and he directed us to the Palazzo Murat. After a short walk of only a few minutes, we found the hotel entrance, went to check in and were greeted with two delicious glasses of lemonade and smiles from everyone. Incredibly, our bags arrived within a few minutes, we checked in and we were shown to our room. It was the perfect start to our Italian holiday! Beautiful, peaceful breakfast buffet each morning on the garden patio, then lazing by the quiet, lovely pool. The streets of Positano are pretty hectic with stores and restaurants lining the narrow streets and tourists everywhere but the Palazzo Murat was a slice of heaven! My only complaint about Positano has nothing to do with the Palazzo - the beach was a rock beach so walking into the water was pretty painful. I'd advise you to bring a pair of flip flops that you can wear into the water. I would recommend the Palazzo Murat to anyone and would definitely return there again.

Room Tip: We had a first floor garden room which had a deck with table and chairs. Perfect for late afternoon...

My wife and I stayed here for four nights in mid October, the setting of the hotel is magnificant, set in beautiful gardens but just a short stroll to either the main beach or the SITA bus stop to travel along the coast.
We ate in their restaurant twice, again a lovely setting in the garden with high quality food and a great atmosphere.
The hotel staff were helpfull and also advised on local restaurants to eat in on the other two evenings.

Room Tip: We choose room 32, it has a balcony overlooking the gardens and a view of Positano town. Plus a limi...

Like so many other reviewers, we were thoroughly impressed with Hotel Palazzo Murat (HPM) Our superior room , with a balcony overlooking the lovely gardens, and with the sea to the side, was a delight. The breakfasts included everything imaginable. Dinner at the restaurant in the evening (we had booked one dinner in our package) was so good that we went back a second time.

Service from the staff was quite excellent, from the reception team to the waiters, and room maids. Rather than repeat the well deserved accolades already given in other reviews about the merits of the hotel, we'll simply add a few details of our experience of the Amalfi coast, which might be more helpful.

We decided to hire a car at Naples airport, which for the few days of our holiday was cheaper than the return cost of a limo. (If we had had more time, we might have investigated the sea/ferry option.) The winding roads along the coast offer fabulous views, and plenty of opportunity to collide with other buses, cars and scooters. The Italian drivers highway code is very different from ours, and joining them is not for the faint-hearted. But for anyone who enjoys driving, having the freedom to go where you like without waiting for buses, and stop and admire a particular panorama, is worth dicing with a wide bus on a narrow street.

Typically helpfully, the hotel reception staff had e-mailed us in advance a photograph of the square where the parking/garage was located in Positano, just 100 metres from the hotel itself. Everything in Positano is up/down steps and on a slope. HPM's excellent location at the lower level of the village, near the beach below, and the square where local buses stop above, reduces the amount of climbing to a minimum.

We drove to Amalfi along the wonderfully wild coastline, and inland to Ravello, both worth visits. On the following day, the ever helpful HPM reception team booked ferry tickets to Capri. The climb from the ferry terminal at Marina Grande up to Capri centro and Piazza Umberto is quite tiring on a hot day, and if the queues for the Funiculare put you off waiting, the small orange buses at the terminus just to the right/ west of the ferry dock offer a good value fare of a couple of euros, and can also take you to other areas of the island such as Anacapri. Having a drink in one of the cafes around La Piazetta is a bit like St.Mark's square in Venice - you pay a lot for the location. Even though we visited in mid October, the number of tourists on the island, as on the mainland, was surprisingly high.

We could only spare three days for a trial run of the Amalfi coast. We will certainly want to stay at HPM when we return. It's at the expensive end of the scale, but worth it.

Room Tip: We liked the Superior rooms in the modern block.

Sometimes spending more is worth it, even in an expensive city; the Palazzo Murat in Positano is one of those places. The hotel is rated 4 star and at least meets those standards. I had reserved the least expensive room (and was warned that there was no view), but luckily was upgraded to a garden view room upon check in. The desk staff was efficient, euro-friendly (not as much as the US), but provided a personal short tour and tall, fresh lemonade, while we waited for the bellman. The room was average size, nicely tiled, furniture for work and relaxing, and a very pleasant balcony overlooking the Mediterranean garden. It had a large flat screen TV with one English channel, a bowl of fresh fruit on check-in. There was a comfortable king-size bed (push together twins) with a high-thread count duvet. The bathroom was fully updated, with a shower/tub combination, towel warmer, upscale-branded toiletries, and lots of thick towels. Turn-down service came with chocolates, a card for the next day’s weather, and a nice letter from the manager.

Internet is included in the rate, but I only found a strong signal in the garden area. There were no water bottles or in-room coffee service.

Breakfast is included in the rate and is one of the highlights. It is served in the garden and includes made-to order coffees, rolls, eggs/bacon (fried prosciutto), and fresh fruit. You will want to linger here and enjoy the ambiance. There are three garden venues, the breakfast area, the restaurant, and a small vegetable garden, all tucked into this pleasant place.

The hotel is not on a drivable street and is reached by walking down the main path to the beach. It is an easy walk with luggage, even when crowed with American tourists. At a cost of 25 euro ($33) a day, you can park any size car at the top and the hotel will bring your luggage down. If you have a small car, the lot next door charges 20 euro a day. If you are into hassles, you can park for free on the outskirts of town and take the circulator bus which stops near the hotel.
If you are going to Positano to soak up the beauty and ambiance, you cannot go wrong with this place and I recommend it.

I had a hard time reviewing this place. we had room 41 at the edge of the complex. the room was decent enough but it just was not as nice as the price nor the other reviewers suggest. the first thing to hit us was the cleaning solvent that was used all over the place. it was so strong that the first thing we did was open up the balcony. the view was of a patch of garden a bit of the pool area. it was a nice enough view but it was more of their vegetable garden that was on display. though very quiet and accessible enough if you go through the restaurant patio but it still felt like we were staying in an old school than a hotel. some might call the furniture 'old world', i would call it 'worn out'. don't even bother with the wifi. i went all over that place with a wifi finder and it was not even strong enough to download email. don't get me wrong, it was a nice place but not deserving of all the accolades that this website has gathered. maybe i was not the audience for this place.

Room Tip: go for a higher room for we had to keep the balcony closed because of the mosquitos.
