From the moment the host welcomed us to his home to the time we left, we had one of the most fun times at a restaurant. On top of that, every bit of food was amazing.

My wife and I along with our two teenage boys did the hike, Path of the gods and happened upon this Trattoria. We had been walking for 3+ hours and were ready for a break and a bite to eat. As we followed the road down to Positano around the bend came wonderful aromas. As we made the bend we saw where the great smells were coming from and there were a handful of cars out front. We decided to walk down the 20 or so steps to the entrance and get something to eat and drink. The welcome we received was warm and as if they were expecting us. It is a large place but only one of the three terraced ding rooms were open. The view is stunning. One of the brother owners came over and explained the meal options. We ordered bottles of mineral water and a bottle each of red and white wine. Then the food came and was served on beautiful painted ceramic ware. Antipasto, assorted vegetables, beans and greens then cheeses. All perfectly prepared and delicious. The the course of " the Mama's Pasta with a plentiful platter of regional pasta favorites and eggplant parmesan. Again all excellent and fresh tasting. Then another brother asked if he would like him to grill us some meat but we declined and moved on to dessert and limoncello. You must find this trattoria on your trip above the Amalfi coast. Our check with the abundance of food and drink was 25 euros a person...now thats a deal!

1500+ reviews for this restaurant, that's a lot of tourists who have been here... I'm wondering why, because we would never recommend this 'restaurant' at all. A few reasons:

- We wanted a pick up at 8.30, but they asked if 8 was okay, because they wanted to pick up other people, too, It was fine for us. After a fifteen minute wait, the owner of our apartment called them and then they said 'there are car troubles, we will be there in 10 minutes'. Our pick up was there at 8.30. We still think they just forgot about us.
- the view is supposed to be really pretty. It is hard to see anything, though, because the restaurant has 'plastic windows', so there's no view when it's dark. The view at night, wasn't worth the drive up there.
- they sell their menu as family style food: 35 euros all inclusive (wine, water, food). No choice. To make a profit, how great can it be? It's home made style, but there are many people who can cook better then this.
- the food: nothing sophisticated or fancy, we knew that. It is just a lot of food with no really special taste, lots of cheese, some of it over salted, heavy, heavy, heavy. Desserts: same thing.
- the wine: simple, okay.
- after your meal you get Limoncello. This is supposed to be served really cold. It wasn't. Besides that, it was also a sweet version, not the real stuff.
- some people also got coffee/tea, some didn't. That probably had something to do with getting on the shuttle bus. Without asking, we were given our check, because we had to get on the bus.
- when we used our credit card, they said they prefered cash. I just think that is rude.
- there was a table with six guys. They seemed to be friends or family (or taxi drivers). They got different food, different drinks, etc. Kind of weird, when your restaurant says everyone gets the same.
- the waiters were not genuinly nice. While they were putting the food on the table and telling you what everything was, they were also looking around or talking to each other. One of the waiters greeted us when we left and when we didn't say goodbye enthousiasticly enough, he started talking (in Italian) to the table with the Italian guys about 'the Americanos' (which we are not)
- during our meal, we had three ants running around on our table

One of the Americans on our shuttle bus back was raving about La Tagliata, it was 'hands down the best and cheapest meal' during his trip. Maybe this was just not our kind of place: I rather pay 50 euros more for good food or eat a cheap pizza for less, but I keep feeling sorry for the people who think this is good Italian food and a nice place. It is not.

We absolutely loved our dinner at La Tagliata. The free shuttle was an appreciated bonus. It was a wet and cloudy evening but the clouds cleared enough when we arrived to show us just how high up above the town we were, and it was spectacular. The meal was delicious. Served immediately as we arrived, and then paced perfectly through the evening, we were stuffed by the end of it. It was every bit delicious. By no means fine dining, but just good quality, tasty, family style cuisine. Plenty of wine, and limoncello to finish, just a gorgeous night. And the staff were lovely! I would highly recommend a visit!

Of all the places we ate at on the Amalfi Coast, La Tagliata was by far the best in all ways. The family owned business has a warm welcoming atmosphere and we felt as if we were visiting friends for a leisurely lunch. There are no menus and none were needed. The family cooks as if company is coming and serves it as they would to friends and family. The food was fresh, home grown and delicious. The service was friendly and familiar. I did not want to leave and considered my time at La Tagliata as the highlight of my trip. I cannot wait to go back and you should make a point of going there
