We'd had a very big day at Portofino with a magnificent lunch at the Ristorante La Terrazza at Hotel Splendido so we were exhausted and just wanted take away something for dinner. The little cafe across the road from our villa did pizzas and other things so we wandered over there. Note to lots of small business owners in Italy: standing in the doorway smoking with loud music blaring from your shop or restaurant isn't the greatest welcome for potential customers. When asked if we could get take away pizzas, his response was "we don't do hot food at night - just big salads". We politely declined and left him to it (probably still puzzling over why he didn't have any customers in his rather large cafe opposite the beach at 8.30 at night. Big salads ? - good grief).
A walk up and down the waterfront of Portovenere also proved fruitless (or pizzaless in this case) and we were about to give up when we passed Bar Al Naviglio which, like Mr Big Salad's place, was deserted but had a pizza sign at the front (all of the other restaurants we went past that night were very busy but we didn't want another big meal).
We wandered in and, with great relief, were able to order take away pizza. Shortly afterwards, we returned to our villa to enjoy most of our pizzas out on the terrace watching the twinkling lights across the bay. The pizzas were big so we had the rest the following day. Two large pizzas, one margherita and one with ham and mushroom, both good and for the princely sum of 14 euros.
Bar Al Naviglio is open all day and seems to serve drinks and meals in the little park across the road on the waterfront. It's not somewhere we would frequent normally but their pizzas were like manna from heaven that night.
