We booked this hotel because all critics were quite good and they were not wrong. This is a small hotel with very few rooms and a lovely restaurant. It is placed 3 minutes walk from all the attractions in Portovenere. Even though you see so many cars in the photographs of Via del Olivo, we were there in the beginning of August and we hardly noticed them. All the contrary, the situation can't be better because it's very quiet all around, even at night. The rooms and the bed, are comfortable, you have good light to read or to move around in the room. The shower is a bit narrow, which can be a bit of a problem if you're a big person, but it is all clean and quite new. Having a balcony is an advantage because you can leave your towels out to dry after coming from the beach or just sit down and drink a beer to enjoy the nice view.
Our stay in Portovenere could not be better because you can take boats to Cinqueterre, to the islands of Palmaria, to Lerici or la Spezzia. there is a bus stop for la Spezzia just outside the Locanda and busses run on a regular basis. From la Spezzia it is easy to reach Carrara by train, you can't miss the marble cavas. There is also a boat to Portofino but you may find yourself roasting for 3 hours under the sun, it is a too long trip since it has many stops before it reaches Portofino, so a good option is a train to Santa Margarita Ligure from la Spezzia.
About the staff in Locanda la Lucciola, I have to say that they are all extremely nice with you. Stefano, the owner, always offered us a nice beer when we arrived after a really hot sightseeing day and he helped us with all questions. Roberto, the chef, was also very kind and we had nice conversations together since their English is very good. breakfast is enough and we asked for cheese, and we had cheese everyday, you also get fresh fruit salad, delicious.
Nearby, you can find Marinella beach where you can go for an easy swim, mainly at the time everybody leaves the beach, from there you may enjoy the wonderful views, just like from the Locanda.
We had dinner at La Lucciola nearly everyday, the restaurant is quite busy but the service and the quality of the food are good... the prices are better than in the centre of Portovenere.
After 6 days we were very sad to leave and I'm sure we'll go back to visit Steffano and his family again.
