Royal Sporting Hotel
Ranked #5 of 7 Hotels in Porto Venere
Reviewed November 14, 2013

We stayed at the Royal Sporting Hotel for three nights in October. It was a bit past the tourist season so things in Portovenere were comparitively quiet. The hotel is located about a 15 minute walk from the center of town and many of the rooms have a beautiful view of the water and the island across the channel. The hotel has a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere with a real sense of hospitality and it houses a restaurant that is a pleasing surprise. Both the service and the food are what you would expect in an upscale, fine dining restaurant. Even if you aren't staying at this hotel, the restaurant is worth a visit. There is also a full service bar which is not a standard feature of most hotels in Otaly. On any future trips to the Cinque Terre area we would definitely stay at the Royal Sporting.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a balcony overlooking the channel.

The hotel is a short walk to the main town with restaurants right on the water.
Hotel has a nice swimming pool and breakfast is served overlooking pool and water.
Need to take a bus or cab from la spezia station.

Hotel was nicely located, spend 2 nights there, distances for activities were good. Views were great from the balcony & terrace. Breakfast was good, fresh fruits available, also allergies were taken into account for specific persons. Also dined at the restaurant, local pasta, fish and meat dishes were tasty. Wine prices at the restaurant were a bit high, but there were a few good choices available with reasonable prices. The staff was very helpful, very sympathic hotel.

Our family of 4 stayed here for 5 nights. The views are second to none. Breakfast on the terrace each morning was wonderful. Staff could have been more helpful and rooms could use a little up date. Overall a good experience.

Extremely well located but do not get fooled by Italian hotels stars. This one would deserve 3 if not 2 stars. Old fashioned up to the design, awful music of poor quality on the pool, very average breakfast. They vacuum noisily the corridors early in the morning and wake you up (maybe to be able to clean your room sooner). Other than that pretty ok. Staff is helpful and nice. But don't stay too long, it would be depressing overtime. You can play tennis.

Room Tip: Seaview better but more expensive

Wonderful room overlooking pool and sea. Great food in restaurant . Superb base nearby for boats to Cinque Terra. Lots of places to visit by boat and sheer heaven to return to lovely hotel sit by pool and relax with beautifully served drinks. Splendid for short break.

Room Tip: balcony over pool

As a North American tourist, I found the price of 250 Euros asked for a small room with a very nice view to be pretty steep especially for a hotel with little service. Very slow internet ( 10 Euros per day) , average breakfast, 20 Euros parking and very little concierge service.
There would be nothing wrong with the place if the price was adjusted to modern standards. The beach or actually the tanning area is not sandy but very rocky and surrounded by a wall. . Actually, it is not a beach at all.
The view form our room was outstanding, I must say, and the people working the front desk very nice.
As another reviewer said, this place needs serious updating especially the showers and the furniture to be remotely worth the 250 Euros asked for one night stay.
Porto Venere is a nice day place but I would not spend more then 48 hours there except if you go to the Cinque Terre park by ferry boat.

Room Tip: Ask for the water view on the corners. They have a totally unobstructed view.
