“Authentic local food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 9, 2014

We picked this restaurant as it looked like it had locals in it! Not top of the list for atmosphere but with quick service and lovely food. We wanted to be back out enjoying the beautiful sights of Portvenere! My stuffed mussels (Cozze ripieni) were just delicious and the local pesto, for which Liguria is well-known, was excellent. When I first travelled to Europe these were the sorts of places we hunted out - not perfect, inexpensive, well-run, with authenticity and a small but solid menu. With our lack of Italian, and theirs of English, we still managed to communicate effectively!

“Extremely expensive for what you get”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 2, 2014 via mobile

We chose the osteria because of the typical ambience, but were more than dissapointed with the service and the food.the portions are tiny,a simple pasta dish costs 9eur and all you get is pasta with a drop of sauce. For such a place, the cover (2eur) is not appropriate. This is by far the worst place in Italy we've eaten.

“A typical genuine good food experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 27, 2014

it was the second time we went to Portovenere and second time here: the mesciua (soup) really good and tasty, the mussel were peefect and the fish great!
Not suitable for "shabby-chic" tourist :-)

“An authentic experience”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 9, 2013

We've stopped to have lunch at this osteria on our day trip to Porto Venere as a group of thirteen people. The menu was short and featured basic dishes such as spaghetti with pesto and octopus salad. I have ordered the latter and the dish was delicious in its simplicity. Contrary to what other reviewers have mentioned, the host did not yell, but was calm and laconic yet welcoming. A good place for an authentic and uncomplicated meal.

“Ligurian institution - a classic not to be missed?”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 1, 2013

We've been going to Carugio for over 25 years now, arguably a masochistic experience since the service is wantonly chaotic and, at least in the past, customers were likely to get yelled at. The menu is very limited and the dishes expensive, for an osteria. Still, the anchovies in oil and lemon are great, the caprino cheese with oil is still the best I know of and the same family still runs the place. The dear old nonna now sits on a chair in the middle of the kitchen, queen of her domain. Very friendly when they get to know you, this is a wonderful old haunt that we still frequent, more out of nostalgia than value for money, but the food is still honest and good, just as it's always been all these years. Not sure about the new kid on the block (spaghetti al pesto)- the pesto was very good indeed, but the spaghetti rather over-cooked.
