“Quiet and excellent value for money”
Reviewed July 26, 2012

We stayed in one of the rooms with a sea view, and the sea view across the bay to Portoferraio with its buildings, lighthouse and the to and fro of passenger ferries is really worth it. Food in the pleasant restaurant is simple and very good. Breakfast is more than adequate.
If you want a beach, then the one at the hotel is just about sufficient, but if you want to be near the sea in what has an almost village atmosphere next to the little boat harbour, then this is the place for you.
The staff are all very friendly and efficient.
Disadvantages? Without a car real shops are a distance away. (The shop at the hotel is not a subsititute). There are buses, but not many, and the boat shuttle to Portoferraio is a wonderful experience, but not terribly reliable: if the wind is too strong or there don't seem to be enough passengers, then it doesn't run.
But all in all, the ten days we spent at Hotel Mare were excellent and will be repeated.

Room Tip: Rooms on the first or second floor with sea view.

We had four nights here, the first night in a room overlooking the car park which was perfectly adequate; for the other three nights we were in a larger room, recently renovated and with a large terrace overlooking the sea. As noted by another reviewer, it is worth trying for a room with a sea-view. The restaurant, where we had dinner on two nights, was good and not expensive. Service was pleasant and very helpful in both the hotel and restaurant. A quiet corner in what can be a very busy resort, even in September. Good value for money.

Nice little hotel a short drive away from Portoferraio (you can not walk from the ferries). Rooms were adequate, pool is nice with short hours. While the beach is private, it is rocky, so bring shoes you can wear in the water. Food at the restaurant is decent and affordable. Check out the water taxi service (very limited hours) for traveling from Portoferraio as it comes right up to Magazzini beach. We were able to get a crib for our son but only after expressing their disappointment we had not told them before showing up (fyi, we seldom indicate this ahead of time when traveling).

The hotel is situated in Magazzini, a tiny village near Portoferraio. The hotel itself is situated next to a tiny square housing their restaurant and a shop/bar. The square also has an office which has a boat dive operator. All very quaint and with the shore right in front of you. All this is even more pretty as when we stayed all the flowers were in bloom.
Our room was great as there was our room with a beautiful view over the yacht harbour and a little annex with two twin beds where our son stayed. It was very clean too.
The service was exceptional and the staff very polite and professional. We were there on a full-board basis and the food was simple, though what was offered was delicious.
We had our car, so were able to try out different beaches every day and didn't make use of the hotel's own beach ( also because other reviewers said the beach was only so-so!) On the last day, we walked to the beach just to take a look and were surprised to see that, although small, was well-kept and the water clean, so was fine if you don't feel like traipsing around to other beaches.
All in all, I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for complete relaxation and the opportunity to really unwind. Our three-year-old would say it was worth it just for the chance to feed the ducks who waddle up to the shore every day!

The Mare is in Magazzini, a tiny fishing village - once upon a time - across the bay from Portoferraio. It is now a yacht harbour and there is no village to speak of, but the location is gorgeous and the hotel wassplendid. There is a decent swimming pool, the dining room is across the harbour about 50 yards from the lobby through which you pass into the garden area surrounded by the bedroom block. The staff were welcoming, the good was good, the half board deal we had was amazing value, and we could choose whether to have lunch or dinner. To get to town you take a boat - there is a service during the day which serves two or three other hotels in neighbouring bays and takes you about 25 minutes. There is also a collectivo taxi service. Neither are vcery frequent, but the times are OK. If you eat out atr night in Portoferraio then a taxi back is affordable, especially if there are more than two of you. We did not have a car, and Elba's narrow very busy roads suggested we were wise - I would not have driven back in the dark In any case you can take a local bus to the other resorts like Porto Azurro and Marciana Marina, both worth seeing. You can scuba dive and the like, although that is not for me.

Stayed there after a business trip in Firenze. I choosed this nice little hotel in Isola D'Elba because there was a boat dive operator at the dock in front of it. A german operator called Werner if I remember, who was very professional. Nice dives! It is not a luxury place but quite charming as flowers where blooming in this little relaxing nest. Very Italian clientele! Room was average but very clean and had a beautiful view on Porto Ferraio bay. Far enough from downtown but it was quiet and intimate. Restaurant food was medium and breakfast minimal. Much better restaurant are in downtown Portoferraio, a 10 mn drive. Overall simple, easy does it.
