“A Gem!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 8, 2011

Coming here after the hoards of tourists in Cinqueterra was such a welcome! We truly felt like we had the entire place to ourselves, which included the outdoor beach area, with chairs and umbrellas provided, and a diving platform to jump right into the sea. We had a perfect view from our room, and a huge balcony overlooking the Med! The place was so peaceful, with its own restaurant that served great food at a very good price. Its a few miles from anything though and on the main roadway (though a bit off the road) from the mainland into Port San Stefano -- but that was exactly the peace and quiet we wanted. The service was excellent and the price of a 4 star place on the water was wonderful for the quality of food and service!

This hotel is on the Meditteranean Sea. The rooms are basic but big. The price is right. Very close to the Filippo which is triple the price if not more.

The restaraunt is the best thing about this hotel because they served one of the best meals I've had in Italy and even better than some of the really really expensive $300/person meal. My favorite is the Calamari alla griglia which I can't find in the states. The food here is cheap about $20/person but very good.

Would definitely stay here again if I go back.

This hotel is located just outside Porto Santo Stefano, right on the ocean. It has a small private beach area with private cabanas for its guests. We did not have reservations so we ended up in a room that lacked an Ocean view but had access to the interior patio. We paid 108 Euros ($150) for the stay, a bargain in the area. Our room was exceptionally clean and comfortable with good AC, a nice closet, a safe and a spotless modern bathroom. The furnishings were simple in appearance, nice and quite modern. A small TV was provided in the room but no alarm clock. (This seems quite common.) A relaxed continental breakfast buffet was included at the hotel’s 3rd floor restaurant. The hotel distinguished itself in its attention to appearance and cleanliness (neither appears to be strength of many of the beach hotels we drove by). I would be surprised if many of the 4 star hotels in the area were as clean or modern and the price could easily have been over $200 a night. We did not care for the shore area itself but the hotel was a true find.

So let me add some context by saying that we decided to make a beach stop as we traveled from Tuscany to Rome. After Florence, Siena and Tuscany we thought that it might be nice to take a break from walled cities and old churches for some time at the sea. Initially we planned to drive from Montalcino in Tuscany (we loved it) to Orbetello. Our previous inn keepers had suggested we make a stop in Bolsena for lunch and see the beautiful walled city on the cliff, Pitigliano. These were both great suggestions. When it came to Orbetello, we got some mixed reactions. We know everyone has different tastes so we decided to wing it and just drive to the area, no room booked!

Driving into Orbetello, we saw why it got mixed reviews, it reminded us a bit of Wildwood, NJ or any other beach community that has long served a major metropolitan area. It was a bit seedy or maybe the right term is dingy and very built-up. I might have enjoyed it more when I was 20 but it was less interesting at 40. I like still like Ocean City, MD so I’m not a complete old man but it was a long way from a Cape Cod, Santa Monica, Newport RI, or the Jersey Shore. It just lacked a feeling of the ocean. As we found, in all of these beach towns the beach and even the hotels seem to be separated from the rest of the town by a busy main road and fast moving cars. It was hard to feel like you could do anything at a hotel without getting back in your car. Why go to the beach if you can’t walk around and hang out? I would never have wanted to bike or walk in the area. We left Orbetello and drove on South on SS1.

Driving South, we got to the town of Porto Santo Stefano and decided that it wasn’t perfect place but it was far better than Orbetello, the day was getting late and we needed a place to stay. We had noticed Hotel Villa Domizia on the road coming into town primarily because the property looked so much better than some other hotels we had just passed. We stopped at the tourist info center and got a map of area hotels and star ratings. Unprompted, the TI staffer noted the hotel by saying it was a 3 star hotel but a good 3 star. In our limited experience in Italy, the star rating can be very subjective and a bad 3 star hotel is likely some place you would not ever want to stay. Luckily the TI staffer was absolutely correct, it was a nice stay. We stayed just 1 night and headed to Rome.
