September is the tail end of the Ponza season, shops and restaurants reduce their opening hours and a number of items are taken off the menu since there are few tourists. The menu at Ippocampo is on the small side to begin with.
However, the service is friendly and attentive and we were delighted with the food we finally managed to order. The seafood starter, a mixture of marinated anchovies, fried fish, boiled shrimp with mayonnaise and tender octopus, was delicious. The fish stew was a simple but tasty dish, thanks to the perfect freshness of the ingredients and the simple broth. I'm told the pannacotta was also excellent. We had local white wine that was perfect with the food and very cheap.
The terrace looks over the harbour, and the seahorse theme plates and lamps are cute and original (for non Italian speakers' information, ippocampo means seahorse).
Warmly recommended, as it's very good value as well as enjoying a central and scenic location and offering efficient service with a genuine smile.
