We went to Villa San Simone mainly for the 3 day cooking school and found we were the only guests in residence. It is just outside of Pistoia up a gravel road. There is a house next door, so we were confused until Lidia answered the bell. She led us to our apartment which was very clean and large with nice kitchen facilities (not needed since we were well fed) and a private garden terrace with a gate leading to the pool, or up through Lidia's kitchen garden to the formal garden above. Lidia and Sandro are retired architects and have done much of the restoration themselves. The villa common rooms are beautifully painted and furnished with eclectic pieces which reflect their art background. Cooking school was like being a sous chef in her kitchen. We both love to cook and enjoyed learning the ins and outs of an Italian kitchen, different appliances, techniques, and styles. We shared their dinner table and felt like family. From this home base, there were daily tours of Pistoia (as old as Florence - don't miss the Della Robia frieze on the hospital), Pescia ( the Oscar Tintori greenhouse of citrus), Collodi (Pinochio), and a wonderful wine estate where we watched the grape harvest and sampled "fetunta". Sandro sets up the tours and will make arrangements or provide maps, As for food; We had a light breakfast each morning, 1 of which was brought to our room, lunch was on tour, and dinner was what we cooked. All delicious, but not fancy...pasta, meat, veggie/salad, beans, dessert.

Room Tip: Neighbor's cats were curious visitors to our ground floor garden terrace

We sometimes wonder if at our age, it would'nt be better to be simply two retired architects.
But when we receive rewiews as yours, we think that our activity is an exceptional opportunity for to meet interesting and pleasant people as you. Thanks of your very gracious words
We have spent a nice time together and found really clever students for our cooking lessons,
and we hope it will be possible to meet you again

Our warmer regards

Stayed with Villa San Simone 5 nights and it was beautiful.
They have a great view to Pistoia and we had nice apartment with our "own" garden area.
Unfortunately they dont do breakfast/or dinner - but I hope they will consider that one day, as the location almost asks for it (would be nice to have outside dinner area).
Driveway needs some attention as we thought that was a bit adventure :) but I am sure the owners will keep eye on it :)

Thank you very much for your gentle and gratifying rewiew.
Now we can serve an excellent breakfast, with fresh food, home made confitures and cakes, prepared by Lidia and also a typical tuscan dinner, cooked with the vegetables of our biological garden.
Also the driveway is now improved. Unfortunately the maintenance of our gravel driveway is not easy, but we prefer to avoid the asphalt and keep the original look of the road.

This beautiful villa is located up on a hillside.
We stayed in one of several apartments. It has its own entrance. Spacious, well furnished and equipped. V large master bed. The hosts were particularly friendly and helpful, and spoke pretty good English.
There are lovely views from the garden over Pistoia and of the surrounding mountains. It's less than an hour to Pisa, 40 mins to Lucca (our favourite) and 40 to Florence. We also drove up into the mountains - going from hot sun at the villa to snow up at the top. We sat on the terrace and painted. Excellent restaurants round about. We would definitely come again.

Our family of 5 spent a week in Villa San Simone above Pistoia, Tuscany. in Autumn 2010. We had 2 bedrooms sleeping 2 in each, as well as a sofa-bed in the large living area for the remaining child. Furnishings and equipment were excellent, and if anything was missing, the wonderfully welcoming and friendly Lidia and Sandro immediately provided what was required. The rooms had some unique features, including high, barrel-vaulted ceilings, enormous open fireplace, and traditional stone floors.

The views from the property are stunning and the journey into historic Pistoia is just 5 minutes. Other major attractions in Tuscany are all within easy access.
