Kings Residence Hotel
Ranked #22 of 24 Hotels in Palinuro
Reviewed September 17, 2005

The Kings Residence was in its day I imagine an extremely luxurious hotel. It is still luxurious today though some of the gloss has worn off. The rooms are rather dated but everything is well kept and works, though the electrics are of a typical mediterranean standard ie a bit lethal!

A warning: Allow 3 hours for the transfer from Naples airport. However I see this as a positive as the views are absolutely breath taking apart from the hair raising crazed drive through Salerno.

The food is OK, there are nice restaurants in Palinuro so you can always go there. Breakfast is fine. General service is exceptional though drinks can be expensive. The pizzas at lunch time are good as is the little beach where they shuttle you back by boat after lunch.

A must see is Paestum (I think you can get there by train also) with its 3 almost complete greek temples along with other greek and roman remains.

Met a nice couple called Angela and John (tried to email but not sure you got it) .Passed some lovely hours round the pool with them.

All in all a great holiday for what we wanted (ie to relax)

The Kings Residence hotel in Palinuro, Italy, is one of the best hotels I've stayed in. The staff are friendly and clearly work very hard!! The hotel restaurant serves an excellent menu of high quality food and the drinks prices are about the same as at home-except you can expect a much larger measure!

The pool area is really peaceful with views that are just beautiful. Plenty of sunbeds and chairs plus a nearby bar with further seating looking over the coast.

Personal beach which is situated at the bottom of the mountain, with some serious steps to go up and down, but really it only takes 5 mins to get down and 10 to go up-or you can get a courtesy boat and bus back. The beach is small but not overcrowded and the sea is clear and bright blue. Careful of sun burn though as it is a real sun trap and you can't feel yourself burning there!

Lunchtime pizzeria in hotel is lovely, but also found a fantastic restaurant just up on the main road called Anema e Core Ristorante, well worth a visit!

Beware that it is about a 3 and 1/2 hour coach journey from Naples airport through the mountains, so pack a good book and some water! It's worth the drive!

We stayed at this hotel having booked it via lastminute and in terms of a "get away from it all" hotel, the King's Residence can only suffer minor criticisms.

The food in the restaurant is excellent: waiter-served and three choices for each course every day. The small pizza restaurant set behind the pool is great for lunch, but order your pizza to share between two as they are a good size.

The hotel pool is great and the public areas (bar, reception, garden etc) are of a high standard, with delightful views. We were a little disappointed with our room, which was in one of the bungalow annexes. Although the balcony was sizeable, with great views, the room itself was pretty basic and not really what we anticipated of a 4-star hotel (barely 3-star). However, it was clean and the air-conditioning was switched on from 1pm - 1am daily. We wonder if the rooms in the main building are of a superior quality.

The King's Residence is the place for you if you want to be away from big resorts, but do be warned that it is fairly cut off from everywhere! It's a fair walk to the town of Palinuro, you can get a ferry to Capri (but this takes 2.5 hours) and a train to the Pompei/Vesuvius area if you really want to stretch yourself, but ideally we think car hire is an essential for this holiday if you want to see some of Italy too.

I've just returned from a weeks stay in the King's Hotel in Cilento which we booked through Citalia Travel on a special offer.

Having read the reviews on Trip Advisor before going to the King's Residence Hotel I was quite pleased, however, the most recent review titled "Stunning location, but thats all" made me a little nervous!

The transfer time took about 3 and a half hours from Naples but it wasn't too bad as the coach was comfortable and had air conditioning. We also had a stop off about half way to use the toilets and get some food/drinks. We were however made aware of this before we travelled.

Once we arrived we checked in and were taken to our room which was actually in the "annexe". I was pretty worried at this point after reading the bad review on one of the rooms in the annexe, however they were actually pleasant little apartments situated to the side of the main building. Inside there was a fairly spacious room with a double bed, a bathroom and a balcony. The rooms are fairly basic but most definitely no where near as bad as the previous review had made out. The air conditioning came on every day from 2pm to midnight. The only down side to the rooms were the shower head, which was a little hosepipe-like but still powerful and the balcony which isn't so private as it's separated from the adjacent room only by a row of flowers.

Now for the good points...

The views from the balcony and throughout the hotel are amazing. The hotel is situated on top of a cliff overlooking beautifully clear waters. The landscape is unspoilt and mountainous. The Hotel's beach is also stunning, and looks exactly as the pictures do on the hotel's website (---). The steps down to the beach aren't so bad there are only a few steep ones right at the bottom. We did on two occasions get the free boat back to the hotel (the boat takes you to another bay where the hotel's minibus picks you up) however we also braved the walk back up the steps and found that it wasn't bad at all!
The swimming pool is lovely, and wasn't busy at all. At busy times there were probably only 8 people using the pool and sometimes we had the pool to ourselves!!

The hotel runs a free minibus to the town (Palinuro) and back and various other places on request. They also arrange minicabs for you whenever you need one. The hotel also provides safes free of charge which are situated in the reception area.

We stayed at the hotel on a half board basis and found the meals to be brilliant. Breakfast was continental with cereals, bread, rolls, ham and cheese, pastries, fruit, tea/coffee and juice. Dinner was based around a menu with 3 choices for starters, 3 for mains, and 2 for desserts, there is a salad buffet. I found the meals to be lovely with quite a bit of variation including various fish, meats (chicken, lamb, pork and veal) and a vegetarian option (however I didn't try this). The desserts were also good, and when given the option of fruit you were practically given a big bowl all to yourself!

Overall, the holiday was excellent and I would definitely recommend the Kings Residence Hotel as somewhere to go if you're looking for a place to relax that is quiet and not overrun by tourists.

Just returned home from a week at Kings Residence. VERY disappointed. We were not informed that the transfer time from Naples airport to the hotel was almost 4 hours. When i asked at the time of booking, i was told 2 hours!
On arrival we were shown to our room.....In an annexe to the main hotel. on a positive note, it did have a bed & a bathroom and a view (all rooms have a view), however, that's where the good ends.
The room was very dark and oppressive, with the standard of decor and fittings that are obviously still there from the 70's. Shabby, grubby and depressing. We asked to be moved but were told that the hotel was full (more of this later) With temperatures at around 38 - 45 degrees in the day, air conditioning was expected. The brochure that we booked through (an itallian specialist) had advertised the hotel as having 67 air conditioned rooms, however, despite the brochure advertising that air conditioning was from 15th June (we arrived 17th) this had not been switched on. When we asked why they said that there was a technical problem and that it would be on by the Monday (20th). It wasn't.....nor was it on by the Wednesday, Thursday or by the Friday when we left! They did supply us with a fan from the Monday, however, although it worked, there was a live wire poking through the flex which was unsafe. The hotel itself advertises that it puts the air conditioning on during July & August at their discretion!!! Needless to say, we were bitten terribly by mosquitos, and at the last count i alone had 37 bites including one on my face which had developed into an infection. The bed was very hard, and on further inspection after 2 terrible nights sleep, and by me catching my leg on something protruding from the edge, we found that there was a melamine table, complete with legs, placed between the mattress and the bed base! When we asked why we were told that people had complained as the beds were too soft. We asked for it to be removed, which they did, and unless you slept right on the edge, you couldn't help but roll together into the middle! The bed should have been replaced years ago. The food is mediocre to say the least. Repetitive and boring and not what you expect from a 4* hotel. I can honestly say that this was the worst hotel that i have EVER stayed in. 2 years ago we stayed in a hut off a small unihabited island off the coast of Australia, which was primitive in the extreme, however the standard of this surpassed the standard of our room at Kings Residence. We affectionately named our room at the Kings Residence as 'the bat cave' due to the location and the darkness.
The best part of the holiday was the beautiful views which really were stunning....and two nights at a fantastic port front restaurant called Taverna del Porto, run by Sergio. The food is superb, and without a doubt would travel there just to eat at Sergios (ask for Ruy who is Brazillian, but speaks superb english)but we will never stay at Kings Residence again. There had been countless other problems but these are being taken up with the tour operator.

This hotel has a fabulous location, and the views are amazing. All rooms have a view of the sea. We stayed in a superior room in the main building with a small balcony. The suites, have a large balcony with two loungers, table and two chairs. The staff are extremely helpfull, the food was fantastic, you are within walking distance from the village of Palinuro, but a car is advised to see more of the area.

The beach is beautiful, the walk down to it is not bad, coming back is a bit tougher but it is well worth it. There is a small snack bar on the beach but it is only open from June to August/Sept.

The outdoor pizza restaurant is also highly recommended, it is only open for lunch but the pizza's are great and the location is yet again beautiful. We can not help but praise this hotel, if you are looking for a relaxing break this is the place. We will definetly be going back.

This hotel is placed on the top of a hill not far from the village of Palinuro. The view towards the "Baia del Buondormire" is more than only incredible, it is really astonishing. The way to the beach is a little adventure tour but worth to do it. At the end of this expedition you will be pleased by a green-blue sea with an incredible water.

If you chose the right time to visit Palinuro, e.g. i May, you can also enjoy all advantages of a mediterranean village without the usual tourist-masses.

Hotel's food is unfortunately not as good as the quality of the rest-"ambiente". But very attractive restaurants in the village with low prices give you the chance to correct this little mistake by yourselves.
