“Charming Paestum Oasis after Rome and Naples!”
Reviewed September 14, 2012

Il Granaio dei Casabella, a delightful country inn lovingly decorated with period pieces, a rest for the soul after the museums and duomos! Gourmet meals and attentive service highlight this elegant haven presided over by a beautiful, gracious hostess. Lovely base from which to explore the best-preserved Greek ruins outside Greece and retreat to the well-kept lush garden… a glass of wine on the veranda! Easiest way to get there is to take the train from Rome to Salerno and thence by local train (or taxi if you have heavy luggage) to Paestum.

Excellent location, lovely comfortable house, very pleasant garden, truly *outstanding* restaurant (we had dinner twice, both times in the garden: it was the best dinner experience of our two week holiday), and not least of all: really very friendly, welcoming hosts. Just a wonderful place to stay!

Hotel is in a great location. Right across the street from the ruins. You do need to walk down to the corner and up the street just a bit for the entrance. Museum is located across the street from the ruins. You have to get tickets to the ruins at the museum.

The room was big and comfortable. Bathroom was big with all amenities. We had a huge porch that was comfortable in the evenings. Great friendly and helpful staff.

Dinner here was AMAZING!!! Dinner was served in the outside garden. Very intimate gourmet meal. We started with a pizza square from the chef (the son, Antonio) and then ravioli like we've never had them before! Then veal all with a wonderful proseco. Dessert was lovely, a little ball of tiramisu along with a pint size cannoli.

The chefs were mother and son. What a great team! One of the best meals that we've had in Italy!

We were so lucky to have found Il Granaio, which was in every way the peak of our three-week trip to Italy! The staff was extremely warm and welcoming. The house has been redone beautifully yet simply and in consistent good taste and is very charming. The garden, where we had tea in the afternoon, and the grounds are lovely. The dinners were wonderfully prepared with all the freshest ingredients and absolutely delicious -- right through to the homemade cannoli (yum). Our room was large and comfortable, with a large bathroom and old-fashioned shudders on the windows. We had a view of the ruins, illuminated at night -- a sight I will never forget. The house is a short walk from the museum and entrance to the ruins. We visited the museum, strolled through the ruins, and had lunch in the garden of the restaurant just outside of the far gate. Perfect. But best of all were the people -- the entire staff of Il Granaio. Thank you all for making our visit so much fun!!! We love you !!! P.S. If traveling by train, it's best to buy a round trip ticket as the Paestum station is always closed.

Room Tip: Our room with a view of the ruins was perfect if you don't mind road traffic during the day (it...

The building is wonderfully restored stone barn. Our room was like a room in your well-to-do grandmother's country house if your grandmother had really good taste in furniture. We also had a glassed-in porch all to ourselves. The restaurant was a pleasant room and the other public rooms were so inviting we wished we were planning to stay for a week instead of one day. The Paestum ruins are a 5 minute walk from the hotel, so the location could not be better. Since the hotel is on a side street, it is very quiet, which is no small thing because the road in front of the ruin was a pedestrianized circus on the Sunday when we arrived.

The people running Il Granaio could not be nicer or more obliging. We were the only guests that evening but they rustled up their excellent cook who provided us with a terrific three course dinner on short notice. Breakfast was much more ample than we could eat, served in a very beautiful glassed-in terrace.
