Owner description: Pozzo della Cava is more than just a well... ...it's one of the highlights of a historical and archaeological tour of Orvieto...it's a place where the past and the present combine with respect for twenty-seven centuries of tradition...it's an invitation to discover Etruscans, Middle Ages and Renaissance, because Orvieto is not only the Cathedral...it's a fascinating underground itinerary located in the heart of Orvieto, through caves full of recently discovered archaeological finds...it's an unusual way of discovering the history the city known as Urbs Vetus and the customs of its people...it's an original opportunity to retake possession of a disinterred heritage

I really enjoyed this attraction which is just a short walk from Piazza della Repubblica, costs only 3 euros and is beautifully displayed. Signage is in 5 languages and gives a nice overview of the history behind these caves. Artifacts are very interesting and seeing how Orvieto's famous wine was stored amazing. It's not the usual kind of museum I would visit but I found it delightful plus it opens at 9am when most sites are closed and stays open until 8pm. As other reviewers have mentioned there is a very cute café with outdoor terrace seating, a small gift shop and very clean bathrooms. No elevators, and lots of steps, but with railings and not difficult. This makes for a very easy and fun 1/2 hr to 45 minute visit and the owner is delightful. Not to be missed!

Visiting Pozzo della Cava is like peeling back the onion skins of time. I'd suggest going as the entry to this historic well and cave system is just about $3USD. Perfect to do on a hot afternoon! I visited with my Alba Tours group and we were rushed, so I feel like I didn't get enough time to really learn and let the history sink in. I would not have found this little gem on my own. There are lots of steps - difficult if you have mobility challenges.

There is more than one system of caves in Orvieto - and I've noticed some confusion between these on TA. This one is privately owned, has a great patio at the end where you can sit and relax and enjoy some food and wine, and meet the gentleman proprietor who is genuinely welcoming and charming.

The history of the discovery of Pozzo della Cava is a wonderful story. Meeting the proprietor, a lovely older gentleman who always welcomes you with a smile as he shows you the treasures beneath his home... He also has a wonderful collection of old vines/grappa/limoncello and great coffee.

If you're in Orvieto for a day or two, this cave is worth a visit. The artifacts were artfully displayed and well-explained in English. We didn't make it to the other big well in Orvieto so I don't know how it compares, but it was closer to where we were staying and open into the evening when most other places were closed.

This is a privately owned cave system and is so well laid out. We appreciated all the notations and explanations in English, which is unusual in this area.
We did not try to restaurant, but it certainly looked very nice.
