GREAT Place - One Major Caveat
We spent a great five days at Rocca de Orvieto. We would highly recommend this place UNLESS you rely upon good wifi access - see below.
The hotel is located on a hill overlooking the town of Orvieto, which provides beautiful vistas of the surrounding areas. We stayed in an apartment in the 'Olive Oil' villa, which probably has the best views of all. The apartments in this particular villa are practically brand new and very, very nice. The beds were great. We saw another building with apartments on the way to our villa which did not look as nice and didn't have any views. Be sure to request the new building if you book here. Driving into Orvieto took about 15 minutes.
The resort features two pools. One is located by the main building (where the hotel rooms are located) and has a function hall and bar next to it. We never saw anyone actually working the bar, so I can't comment on that. There is another newer, larger pool up the hill by the apartments which is actually a nicer pool with a beautiful view of the valley.
The hotel provides free mountain bikes to guests, free laundry machines, wood barbecues, and free breakfast, which was decent. They are also their own vineyard and make their own wines, which were surprisingly difficult to sample/purchase on-site. We were told we could taste them at the pool bar, but again, never saw anyone working there. But we didn't mind this so much.
Now to the big caveat.
Our only complaint was that if you stay in one of the apartments, which are located in a separate area farther up the hill, the wifi does not work most of the time. Our internet only worked for one out of the five days we stayed here. Whenever it wasn't working, we had to walk about five minutes down the hill to the other part of the complex with our computer and find a place to sit and use the Internet. This was difficult later at night, as the reception area closes up and the other public areas are either the restaurant, which is awkward to sit at and do work while other guests are trying to enjoy a nice dinner, or outdoors by the pool, which is invariably either rainy or full of mosquitos at night. We mentioned the wifi issues several times to the reception, who acknowledged the issue and said they'd look into it. To their credit, the two ladies at reception were very friendly and understanding, but seemed only somewhat interested in getting to the bottom of the issue. At one point, a technician came by to fix the wifi. It stopped working again about an hour later. We do need good wifi access for work, which is always a consideration when we book a hotel. As much as we would like to, we unfortunately do not have jobs that allow us to simply drop off the grid for several days at a time. It seems that this was not as important for most of the other guests, of which I am truly envious. However, we booked our hotel in part based on the promise of wifi access. Hopefully, this hotel will take measures to fix this issue for guests staying up the hill, or include a disclaimer on their booking site that wifi in the more remote rooms is unreliable at best, so that people who need do get work done during their holiday will not rely on it.
In summary, if you don't rely on a good wifi connection, we would recommend this hotel wholeheartedly. Our five star rating ignores the wifi issue, as we thought everything else about this place was wonderful, and want to give them the benefit of the doubt in the wifi department.
