This is a budget friendly hotel that was very nice for what we paid. We stayed in the "new" part of the hotel across the street. While there was nothing fancy, it was located in a convenient place just 5 minutes or so walking (uphill) from the train station. The only issue we had is that the funicular which goes to the main part of Orvieto stops running in the evening and we had to search for where to get a bus to go back down the mountain to the hotel area. I wish I had been explained the details of where to find the bus a little better at check in.

This is a quite hotel well placed at the bottom of the funicular to get into orvieto. It is run by a charming Italian lady whose speciality was cake making, the spread at breakfast was incredible, she did her very best to look after us.

a very good three star hotel

We stayed at 4 hotels on our recent tour of Umbria and although we only stayed at Hotel Picchio for one night it was memorable. This was partly for the reasons given by other reviews- e.g. convenient location- you can actually walk up steep rise to town centre in 15 minutes in daylight only as the pathway is not lit. The funicular nearby is the more conventional route- it runs every 10 minutes. The breakfast was amazing- so many homemade cakes and the best capuccino we had in any of the hotels we went to. The owner is quite a character. Only downside is poor plumbing in what is a new annexe building.

Stayed at Hotel Picchio for one week in May 2011. Our room was in the new building and was very clean and comfortable. The owner was very kind and helpful and treats everyone like family. Our holiday consisted of walking and using the trains to travel around, this hotel was ideally situated for this with only a short walk to the station, but far enough away for no train noise. Would like to go back here some time, this hotel was ideal for us. Lovely people and delicious homemade cakes.

Located at the base of the fornicular which goes to the upper hill town it is very convenient to both the train station and the autostrada. The owner is extremely helpful in suggesting day trips. She suggested we visit Civita di Bagnoregio and this was a jewel. Wi Fi is available for a minimal fee.

The good things:
Close to train station and funicular, and also free parking was readily available out front, at least off season when we stayed there.
The family that runs the place is very nice, and speak good English
The bad things:
The plumbing left a lot to be desired: the sink and bidet, but thank goodness not the toilet, were plugged during our four day stay. The room was dated and a bit on the depressing side. The walls are thin, as admittedly is common in Italian hotels, but unfortunately here the people in the next room blasted their TV.

We stayed in Hotel Picchio for one night, and we enjoyed it thoroughly. The room was incredibly large, like a studio (but no kitchenette!), and the bed and mattress very comfortable. The TV was not up to standard, but as we speak little Italian it didn't really matter. Oriveto Scalo is a five minutes drive from the city parking lots, but we gathered that one could walk to a 'scala mobile' . Anyway when in Umbria, be ready to walk up and down... The owner of the place is a lovely woman, very welcoming and friendly, and the pastries for breakfast are home-made, and absolutely delicious.
