“Underground Adventure”
Reviewed August 24, 2014

If you can, try to get on a trip without too many children. The underground was fascinating, but I could not hear the guide with all of the chattering and crying going one. Interestingly, the "English" language tour was full of German and Dutch travellers, who clearly understood English quite well. Gorgeous children, but chatty.

“A Cool Break”
Reviewed August 19, 2014

Guided tours (tickets at Visitor Center in the main square) take you under Orvieto into a labyrinth of connecting caves, used in past centuries as storage, living quarters in some cases, but it seems mostly for housing pigeons. Holes in the cave walls were for pigeon nests which were raised for food back when you couldn't get enough pigeon. You tour just a small portion of the thousands of feet of caves under the town but you can see stairways (now blocked) that led to houses, the channel carved into the wall that carried water and one of the wells that drops hundreds of feet. Cool. And I'm now seeing pigeons in a whole new light.

“These caves are amazing.”
Reviewed August 3, 2014

We toured the caves in the afternoon. It was the last English tour. The guide was very knowledgeable and informative. The tour was approximately 1 hr. It is a short walk from the tourist information. There are many steps and elevation changes, and some tight quarters, but well worth the $$.
