“Worth a Visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 8, 2013

If you have extra time, the caves are worth a visit. The tour runs about 45 minutes, and is quite interesting. The guide was very knowledgeable. However, if you have any type of walking/stair issues, you may want to reconsider going. While it's not especially long or difficult, you may be uncomfortable. An elderly gentleman (about 80), decided to turn back.

“Well paced tour of underground”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 4, 2013

The caves underneath the city of Orvieto should not be missed. The tour guide gave an excellent history of the area and the uses of the caves. Tours were provided in English throughout the day. Check the times a the visitor center.

“Very interesting!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 2, 2013

The cave tour was amazing! We enjoyed our tour of the caves and found it very interesting and the tour guide was very informative. To see what man created to survive was very inspiring. The area leading to the caves has an amazing view of the countryside. We stopped to take in the view just wish we had a bottle of wine and would have spent the afternoon there. There are three tours a day in the low season and you can purchase tickets next to the tourism office across the Palazzo from Duomo Cathedral. This is a must see!

“Come if you truly want to learn more about Orvieto...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 2, 2013

Yes, I heard much about the Duomo. It's truly remarkable but then again, I wanted to know deeper about Orvieto. I'm sure that it's more just being a quaint town that's within one hour ride away from Roma. I asked myself what's the big deal about visiting caves as I have visited many in my lifetime. With a why-not attitude today, I joined the tour & I was pleasantly surprise. The tour itself was succinct but straight to the point. I joined the English tour & she explained to us that we were quite lucky because during summer time, there would be tour groups heading into the caves every ten to fifteen minutes. In winter time, she could pace herself & as a result, we got to see more and learn more. To put things in a nutshell, Orviento is actually quite an ancient town. It's been built on volcanic materials. In the beginning, there was Etruscans but later on, Romans tried to ransacked the town. Surprisingly, Etruscans held fort for two long years, the longest campaign ever been waged by Romans and the clue was the caves. By joining the tour, you would appreciate the significance of pigeons and you get to find out the difference between these caves and other caves. It's truly fascinating and something that's specific and special to Orvieto. If you are a history buff, then, this is a tour that you shouldn't miss!

“Interesting tour”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 1, 2013

This tour (included on our Orvieto carta unica ticket) was both informative and fascinating. The guide explained how and why the caves developed and the fact that they were dug by hand using simple tools. This is not a tour for someone who cannot climb many stairs - some which are uneven and steep. My only complaint is that there were way too many people on the tour. The guide was always waiting for people to "catch up", which cut her commentary short.
