The tour wasn't quite what I was expecting, and I was a little disappointed that the tour only consisted of two caves (the rest are all privately owned). We did learn some interesting history about the caves and the town, but I'm not sure it was worth the money. I thought it would be an elaborate underground system of caves and tunnels, but it was a very short tour of one small section and it only took about 40 minutes, including the walk down.

This was a cool little tour. You don't get to see much of the underground caves, but enough to get a feel for how the first settlers lived 1000's of years ago.

You get to see a couple of caves (there are hundreds under the city, but most are just wine cellars) One has an old olive oil press in it, the other some pigeon houses.
Don't waste your time and money.

Orvieto is a butte made out of volcanic tuff. These caves were carved out of the rock for thousands of years. There are thousands of rooms beneath the city and on this tour you will see a sampling of them. Many are now privately owned and are used to store wine which, given the temperature is a constant 55 degrees F. preserves the wine perfectly. This is a must see in Orvieto.

You need to book in advance at the tourist office. The tour is given by one of the staff who speaks very good English and has a very clear knowledge of the history of the caves and the town. The caves are lovely and cool and it was a most worthwhile way to spend some time in Orvieto.
