Don't miss this exciting walking tour through underground city which includes tunnels, wells, galleries, cellars, hidden passageways with lot of small niches, dating from Etruscan times till modern history. The tour itself lasted for about an hour with very knowledgeable English spoken guide. At times it is not easy to climb narrow stairs and passages, but it is worth every effort!

We sampled 2 of a number of tours available of the tunnels and caves carved from Tufo by the resourceful people of Orvieto. A tribute to their courage and determination.

This little walking tour, which lasted about 45 mins and costs 6 euro per person, was okay but nothing fantastic. We got a little history of the cave network as we descended some narrow steps into our first cave. Our guide also explained about the rock that the caves were dug out of, and what some of the formations might have been used for. The second cave was a little more 'adventurous' with some steeper, narrower steps leading down to what was the pigeon coops.
A little bit more history about pigeons, a couple more narrow stairs and we were back to the surface. Not bad for the price.

Tour of 45 minutes was worth to attend (you only can visit the cave by tour). You can learn little bit of a history of Orvieto as well.

One of the reasons I chose to stay in Orvieto was the underground caves. I thought it very interesting that there was a series of caves under the town. We booked the english speaking tour at the office opposite the Duomo. It is cheap to do and very informative. The guide did a wonderful job and it was well worth taking the tour. A tour is the only way you can visit the caves. You can not wander through by yourself. Hard to imagine people living down here all those years ago. Definitly worth doing.
