Owner description: Orvieta's magnificent Duomo (cathedral) is considered one of the must-see churches in Italy for its stunning gold-and-mosaic Gothic façade and magnificent frescoes by Luca Signorelli, which had a great influence on Michelangelo's work in the Sistine Chapel.

“Absolutely stunning. Gives Florence Duomo a run for it's money”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 19, 2013

Just a spectacular building that's well maintained and much cleaner than Florence's Duomo. You can really see the detail that went into building this magnificent structure. Best viewed at sunset and sunrise when the hoards of daytrippers have long gone.

“One of the great Cathedrals of Europe”

The Duomo of Orvieto is one of the great monuments of Italy, in terms of its architecture, sculpture, painting, and location. Not to be missed.

“Surprise, surprise!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 11, 2013

Orvieto is not very far from Civitavecchia. A very special place. Not big but very interesting. The great surprise comes when you walk uphill and suddenly getting out of a narrow lane you see the 14th c. Cathedral. It's world famous but you never expect such a façade there. You need days to examine carefully the endless details: Bas reliefs, golden mosaics, sculptures, huge bronze doors, etc. Big or tiny, everything is amazing. Very bright colours. You can't think its so old. The 2 sides of the Cathedral are influenced by the Arabs. The Moorish style is there and it's dominant also in the interior.
You walk into the Cathedral, look around to admire different styles, paintings and decoration and finally (as every guide leaves this space last!) you get into the Chapel of Madonna di San Brizio or Signorelli's Chapel and you stay speechless! Signorelli's frescoes are among the best in the world of that period. They are above imagination and above description. You must see them live to believe how beautiful they are.
The number of painted figures is so big you can't really see all of them in the limited time of a guided tour. But even so you'll remember them for ever. Something unique in Orvieto! How can you miss it!

“gorgeous!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 8, 2013

The most amazing church for such a small town! Our first glimpse was during a summer hail storm. Then the sun came out and the golden facade just glowed. The chapel with frescoes by Luca Signorelli is simply stunning. Interesting history about how this town was spared in WW2 - by an agreement between a British major and a German officer. Truly a gift to humanity.

“Magnificent”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 4, 2013

The Duomo was begun over 700 years ago and contains original art from the hands of the Renaissance inspiration Fra Angelico and later Sgnorelli.
The Duomo's exterior is overpowering and dominates it's Piazza. The interior is beautiful with it's paintings and architecture.
