Owner description: Orvieta's magnificent Duomo (cathedral) is considered one of the must-see churches in Italy for its stunning gold-and-mosaic Gothic façade and magnificent frescoes by Luca Signorelli, which had a great influence on Michelangelo's work in the Sistine Chapel.

Beautiful inside but dull. They have taken all the fantastic statues that were in the Duomo and moved them to another church.

We viewed the Duomo early in the morning, very few tourists and inexpensive to visit, three euros. You can get very close to the chapel and frescos wandering around to the sounds of very pleasant but quiet hyms being played in the background. Prior to it being on cctv you can see graffiti dating back to the 1920's along side and sadly on some of the frescos. Definitely worth seeing.

Like a lot of things, this Duomo is what you make of it. If you are into really old churches, then you will enjoy this. There is a really good brochure that leads you around and explains the things you are seeing. The enjoyment was enhanced by a practice for a festival that was in rehearsal when we were there. The music was ethereal and totally in keeping with the ancient walls.

Occupying a presupposing position in a grand piazza at the height of the town, the Duomo di Orvieto has distinctive facade and structure. Inside, there are fabulous frescos and a wonderful sense of the history of the cathedral throughout the generations.
