Owner description: Orvieta's magnificent Duomo (cathedral) is considered one of the must-see churches in Italy for its stunning gold-and-mosaic Gothic façade and magnificent frescoes by Luca Signorelli, which had a great influence on Michelangelo's work in the Sistine Chapel.

“Incredible!”

Just the thought of undertaking such a project high on a hilltop is overwhelming. 300 plus years produced an awesome spectacle and engineering accomplishment. The facade is one of the most beautiful I've ever seen, and the interior is breathtaking. Well worth a day-trip from either Rome or Florence. Easily reachable by funicula and bus directly in front of train station on a combination ticket.

“Spectacular Inside and Out”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 5, 2012

I've been in a few duomos during my travels in Italy, and this one in Orvieto is one of my favourites. Yes, it's imposing. Yes, it's full of history. Yes, it has soaring vaults and impressive stained glass windows, but what I like most about it, however, is the external frontage - it is vibrant, full of colour, and spectacular when the setting sun catches it full on and highlights the gold in the frescos. It is also unique with it's licorice and white stipe stonework that makes up the other 3 sides.

“a must see”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 4, 2012

The Cathedral is so rich in details, it is literally breathtaking. One of the most beautiful ones I have seen in Italy.
Make sure you are not going to make pictures only, and go inside the Duomo Di Orvieto. I was surprised to find it not so crowded with sculptures and painting like others. For the inside part of Orvieto Cathedral, less is more. You will be surprised. For me, the highlight inside is the painting in the ceiling on the right side chapel by Luca Signorelli. It is absolutely amazing!!! Looking at that ceiling, here was my thought "I wish I could lie down in this floor and gaze at this for some time". I learned to appreciate Luca Signorelli even more.

“Rather cavernous and empty”

An amazing structure though the main section are quite plain inside and it is rather empty.

Worth studying up or taking a guide if you are interested in the religous or architectural history.

“Incredible!!”

Despite having seen most of the major cathedrals in Florence, Rome and Venice this one truly took my breath away. we were about the last ones in the cathedral in the evening...and what a difference that makes....it was so quiet and peaceful
