Fascinating bit of 17th century engineering. The well is very large and very deep. Just remember, climbing down is the easy part!

Thoroughly enjoyed descending the almost 500 steps to the bottom of the well and seeing the still existing water then ascending again in the double helix construction of the well. Entrance fee was three euros and was well worth the time to see a piece of history. Highly recommend.

The double-helix staircase means you spiral down around the week on the staircase, and climb back up a different one. This was done so animals could be taken down for water, but not need to pass each other on the stairs coming back up.

Well, This well is actually pretty ancient, so when going down up to the bottom, if you know how old it is you'll notice what a marvel it is.

This well was built in the 16th centuryto provide water to the papal city of Orvieto, with 2 spiral ramps built in order to have mules able to go down and pick up loads of water. After knowng these facts, you'll appreciate the trip to the bottom of the well much more! :)

The well is amazing! Have to see for oneself to understand! I left with the impression that back then people were smart and brave! They took the water out on donkeys backs, so I assue there was a lot of droppings in their drinking water. Anyway, afetr so many years, it looked apetizing to me. An unique place to be discovered!
