“Amazing structure”
Reviewed October 3, 2012

I thoroughly enjoyed my tramp down and back up the 'Pozzo'. The stairs are very easy even though there are 240 of them. It is in excellent condition and remarkable in design and build for the time.

If you are not that fit, you can take your time. I must add thought the exit gate would be a challenge for anybody who is 'large' but I assume the entrance people would warn you on entry of that were a potential issue and if so, track back up the same way you came down as there is no discerning difference in the alternate paths.

Also an importand note for anyone with small kids which we did, we were not warned that it is quite dangerous as the 'windows' bases are quiet low and and enticing for small kids to peer over into the Pozzo and risk a very long drop if they lean over too far. There are no guard rails.

Anyway very much worth a visit.

“Not for the Unfit or Faint Hearted”
Reviewed September 24, 2012

The well is tryly fascinating. Apparently the double helix staircase gave Crick and Watson the idea for the double helix structure of DNA, which is not a bad claim to fame. In practical terms it means that the people going down don't meet those going up.
The steps are shallow and both well lit and well manitained. The many windows into the interior give a great view of the strangely blue / green water. At the bottom the clarity of the water is amazing and it seems the coins at the bottom are just below you, while they are actually several feet down.
The trek back up has little to commend it. You get the same views you probably lingered over on the way down, but most likely need to linger over longer going up to get your breath.
Worth it if you can manage the 200+ steps in each direction.

“Once you are prepared to walk, this is a must”
Reviewed September 24, 2012

I stumbled upon this at the far side of the town, and the decent deep down into the well is fantastic, it is interesting to appreciate the overlapping stairways as those who ascend pass over and under those descending. Take a picture from the top and the bottom to appreciate this place, and of course make a wish here and enjoy the climb back up to the lovely views that can be seen from the grounds surrounding the well

“Been there a number of times..”
Reviewed September 7, 2012

Have been down the well several times...we have taken those who have travelled with us on various trips, the last one was July 2011. If you are in Orvieto there is great parking just near the well and it really is interesting and nice relief from the heat in summer! Take care and a note of caution though...if you are not great on your feet this might not be for you...the stairs go all the way down and stairs all the way up, they can be a little slippery in spots and...well...they are stairs, so you need to know your limits...generally though for a fit and able person a walk in the park, as they say.

“Down down the well”
Reviewed August 15, 2012

Worth the seven story hike down..and up..just for the experience. I am 64 with a cardiac condition but I took it slowly. The steps are not steep. They are the elongated type that you will see in many palaces for the horses to enter. These steps were designed for donkeys so while there are a lot of them..steps..a mere human can manage. I had trouble taking photos but a postcard showed the whole picture.
