Other reviewers have extolled the virtues of the location on the Duomo square, the amazing religious and historic importance of the city, and the quaint-ness of the Hotel Virgilio - and I could not agree more with all of them. So my review is about something else.
What struck me is how the Duomo square, and indeed all the city, changed after the tour groups and day-trippers left. The hotel and surroundings take on a peaceful feeling of a neighborhood that comes alive with its residents. Children kicking soccer balls wiht dads, or walking hand-in-hand with moms, or groups of pre-teens just being pre-teens, remnded me that the hotel is an integral part of a real community - and those of us who are the ocassional tourists should never forget that - and that we need to experience that in the middle of our whirlwind vacations!More
