For the third time, this June we assembled 16 friends for a week's villa holiday, with a lot of 'must-haves' - private bathroom for each of the 8 bedrooms, attractive outdoor seating and eating areas, infinity pool, sightseeing within reasonable distance, good kitchen facilities, etc. We have had some problems in the past with micro-managing owners, too.
After much searching and checking, i settled on Torre Bisenzio. We had inadequate directions, to say the least, but eventually found the drive and boy, what a white-knuckle experience! An untarred, nearly vertical road leading straight up...after a couple of tries we made it (we soon learned to approach it at the run in first gear - and to stay in first gear until arriving at the villa).
The housekeeper, Cynthia, was there to greet us, and it was the start of a blissful week. One by one, wheezing rental cars coughed up the drive, but anxiety turned to smiles as each of our friends saw the villa: it stands on a ridge, high above the surrounding landscape (hence the drive), and the views are just FANTASTIC, in all directions. Cynthia's husband looks after the gardens, and he is an artist: there are flowers everywhere - the outdoor area is just lovely.
We were left to our own devices as much as we wanted, but could ask for help when needed. We got used to the drive quite quickly, and visited the huge, well stocked supermarket (10 minutes' away) daily as each couple took a turn preparing dinner. Orvieto (visible in the distance) boasts a simply wonderful cathedral with frescoes by Simone Martini and Fra' Filippo Lippi, and is about 20 minutes, and also the lake of Bolsena (excellent fish restaurant overlooking the water) and Bagnioregio, a tiny medieval village reacheable only by a footbridge.
The pool is beautiful: some friends spent the whole week lying in the sun - we also had a barbecue dinner one night down by the pool - far enough away from it to allow visiting grandchildren to roam - with excellent barbecue facilities and plenty of tables and seating.
The Torre Bisenzio is undoubtedly the nicest, best equipped villa we have rented ( and the others were beautiful, too)...having Cynthia around every morning was a boon, the pool and BBQ area are fabulous, the bedrooms are all comfortable and well-equipped - the master bedroom is amazing - and the general area is very much worth exploring. Everyone in our group loved it and we intend to go back! Highly recommended.
We have just spend 2 of the most beautifull weeks of our lives. Pampered in this magnificent estate, with it's organic food ,olive oil and wine , an experience we will never forget. If you did not think that paradise on earth exist, you are wrong...is right here so look no further!
