The Alpe Di Siusi - it's a large mountain meadow which reminded me of the first view of Hyrule in Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Gently rolling landscape with a lot of areas visible, many paths to take and explore.

You can get here by cable car from Ortisei and just start walking. The area is so large it has its own town (Compatsch) and bus service.

For best photos I recommend going up here when it's partly cloudy - not completely clear day, not completely cloudy day- you'll get the somewhat misty morning shots and it goes well with the rugged mountains.

Strongly recommend this. If there's just one thing you do while in Val Gardena, it should be this. It's family friendly - I saw plenty of bikes and prams and families walking about. It's a very popular place for a good reason.

Nice area in Oritsei and they have their own underground and outdoor parking (for pay). Bathooms at the bottom and top. No big lines to buy ticket. What I did not understand is this- once you go up on the cable car, you are overlooking the Alpe di Suisi-not on it. You would need to hike down to it. However, you can purchase a ticket that is for the cable car and chair lift which will then take you down to the meadow (they have English for ticket booth menu). Fortunately, we were able to take the chair lift down and pay separately. The food at the restaurant was decent but service was terrible, had to beg several times for the bill and eventually chase down the waitress inside the restaurant in order to just pay and be able to leave. Maybe if they are not busy it would be OK.

Wonderful easy ride up the mountain from Ortisei. €12.50 (one way) hike around the valley once you reach the top. Enjoy lunch and a beer. Then follow signs for trail #15 back to town. Took us a bit over an hour. Trail is well marked.

At a reasonable price (around 18 Euro for a return ticket) the cable car brings you to about 2000 meters. Stunning views of the mountains surrounding the Seiser Alm and plenty of hikes available in this 48 km2 area. All not very demanding and with a lot of possibilities to stop for a drink or meal. Make sure you check out the weather before going up.
