“Typical Italian agriturismo=perfetto!!!”
Reviewed May 27, 2013 via mobile

Set among vineyards on a hillside with views of mountains from every side. Lots of space and chairs for relaxing with a glass of wine to enjoy....and even playground equipment for the kiddos as well as a few minature horses and a donkey. The entire complex was built in the 14th century. The family has done a wonderful job keeping the antiquity restored. The rooms are spacious with high ceilings and ornate antique furnishings. Make sure to enjoy dinner at the agriturismo which was delicious from start to finish and for only 20 euro. Great selection of local vino!! Everything an agriturismo should be!!!

My husband and I stayed 2 nights this past November, the last 2 nights in Piedmont before heading home. We chose Ghemme because it was not far from Milan Malpensa from which we were flying home on an early morning flight. Also, it is home to Cantalupo and very near Gattinara where the Travaglini winery sits. The agriturismo is run by a family and they were very nice and accomodating. We needed to leave very early on last morning, so they arranged for an electric coffee maker for our room.

Our room was lovely with high ceilings and a surprisingly comfortable bed. Among the grounds, there is a pen for 2 ponies and a donkey, plus a ram that was gated in. Farther on the other side was an area with chickens, geese and ducks. To be honest, part of the attraction was the animals, but there were not as many animals as we would have liked and the 2 dogs of the owners were penned up in a very small gated area, which seemed a bit sad.

Ghemme is not the prettiest town in Piedmont with more industrial buildings and new construction, but if you are there to visit the wineries or to visit outlets (there is a large Loro Piana outlet right near Ghemme), I would recommend this agriturismo. It is not luxurious, but the price is right and the owners are very nice.

Such an amazing location in amongst the vines above the town of Ghemme, and the accommodation in this 'rustic' sprawling villa is superb. Big rooms, great breakfasts, lovely walks, amazing building. Staff are friendly and helpful (wish we spoke more Italian!) and the location to the best stuff in northern Piedmont is great. This is a super spot and a great place to stay and visit this region.

Room Tip: All are great, was enjoyable overlooking the livestock!

Myself and a couple with their 2 children aged 7 and 9 stayed here for 3 nights. We loved it from the first 5 minutes. The large stone farmhouse has been recently renovated - rooms with modern bathrooms, high ceilings, beautiful furniture, lovely big windows overlooking the valley and vineyard. The bed had soft lovely sheets, and was comfortable. The kids stayed in single beds on a second level in the room. There was no air con that I noticed, but we didn't need it - cool at night even after 27C over the day.

The owner/chef is easy going, always willing to help, and gives you the space and tranquility that you want. You can buy local wines, jams, risotto with his recommendations as needed. He was always willing to get us a bottle of water, wine for sipping after dinner, provide dinner recommendations, or help identify the best running/biking trails. There is a fleet of mountain bikes for your use, and many km's of peaceful pathways to bike/run/walk on.

The courtyard is STUNNING. Tables, lounge chairs, candles, a willow tree... shade, sun...baskets of red flowers, the scent of the jasmine tree... old farming tools decorating the walls. I could spend a day there alone!

Outside the house, you find greenhouses of tomatoes, squash, peppers as well as a donkey, ram, 2 shetland ponies and many ducks, geese, chickens. The kids were in heaven! And of course, acres of vineyards!

Dinner is only served around weekends (maybe Fri to Sunday?) so we enjoyed a delicious meal on Sunday night upon arrival. They will adjust to your schedule, and diet (I am wheat intolerant so I enjoyed risotto, chicken, and salad). Breakfasts included yogurt, peaches/apples, cereal (corn for me), cappuccino/coffee/tea/juice, eggs, bread, cookies.

We were recommended to go to Vecchia Sizzano for dinner and it was fabulous! Gorgonzola Risotta was superb, as were the many other plates we enjoyed.
Wireless access was easy, free and wonderful to have!

I would definitely recommend the farm house for a lovely vacation.

Il Cavenago is a rustic gem of an Agriturismo! A wonderful welcoming and attentive staff, a large and beautiful room with views of the surrounding hillsides, and the food and wine we came to experience. I loved this place from the moment I saw it and the dinner they serve for the guests is five star. The local wines are some of the best Nebbiolo you will find! Walk the grounds and visit with the animals, breath in the vines and their misty purple grapes. You must visit this place!

We received a great welcome on arrival with a lovely bottle to local wine.
The Martinoly family was really friendly and helpful.
My husband made use of their mountainbikes (he only fell off once!?). The house is set high in a beautiful vineyard and has great views of the surrounding area. There a lots of animals around at the farm. Great courtyard for relaxing and playing with the dogs (and great for watching the lightnening by night)

The house has been very tastefully restored and there was some great antique furniture in our room.
Unfortunately we only stayed one night. We had a great evening meal and enjoyed a bottle of wine from Rivolotti over dinner. Our host kindly arranged for us to visit Rivoloti's winemaker in their winecellar in the castel in Ghemme the following day!

A great start to our holiday in Italy.

In between the Swiss alps and the Alba area, my wife and I spent two days at Il Cavenago in Ghemme.

We stayed in room 5, which was the count's bedroom back in the seventeenth century. It is a fabulous grand room that - along with the rest of the main building - has been renovated to modern standards while maintaining the original atmosphere. And everything was clean.

We arrived at noon Sunday just as the Martinoly family was getting ready to recieve a number of local parties for lunch in the restaurant. We decided to join and were treated with a meal with too many courses to count. Great food accompanied by a good wine from the extensive list.

We also had dinner Monday (just three courses, thankfully) - this time by ourselves. The restaurant only opens for non-guests during the weekend.

The courtyard was a nice place to hang out, and it was nice to have wi-fi.

The Martinoly family was friendly and helpful far beyond the call of duty. Our car had a small problem which was swiftly solved because Silvio accompanied me to a garage. And when we decided to picnic in the courtyard Sunday evening, his farther and mother were quick to offer us cold water and glasses for our wine.

  • Liked — Our room, the courtyard, the meals, the wine list, the hosts
  • Disliked — A few mosquitoes
